The ONLY downside to this mod I have ever heard of is DOING the mod itself.

I would not advise doing it [yourself] if you don't have experience soldeing on PCBs and an adequately sized iron for removing the old one from the PCB.

Many have lifted lands/pads and runners (which can be repaired by adding wires).

The backside of the original reg's. case acts as the surface for the heatsink. The PCB forms that heatsink and you have to add the heat quickly enough to overcome the dissipation yet not keep it on long enough to damage the PCB or surrounding components.

Why not just charge the pack to 80% or so, maybe only to 11.1 or something.

Because 11.1V is 80% run down, not 80% charged. If you were to charge it to 80% charged it would be at around 12.1-12.3V.

We'll I mean why not charge the lipo to 11ish volts and leave it, it will still last longer than the nicads, plus no reg mod needed. or I guess just adding the diodes is the easiest way without cracking the case open

There are other mods, like using a diode, that allow you to safely run a lipo in your transmitter but this thread is about the vreg upgrade. It is not done to allow the use of a lipo, it is done to increase the run time and if you also happen to be running a lipo, then you get that added benefit.

I added the regulator, you have to be careful when installing but I can say that I have had no "noise" or any other issues with this mod. Glad I did it.

Just bought the DE-SW033 voltage regulator for my X9303 after reading Vermonster's howto here.
Hope it will perform as expected.
Won't use a Lipo but a 2000mAh Eneloop pack and a 2700mAh regular NiMH pack.
Good enough for me.
Thanks Vermonster

does anyone know if the dx7 in trainer cable connected mode (sim, buddy) deactivates the rf stage and therefore draws less current ?
I note that the act of inserting the trainer cable turns on the tx.. so maybe it isn't fully on?

Ok guys I haven't charged the Lipo since 4/3/10 and it's at 11.3 volts today. This is using it for average flying and simming.

Did you see the title? It says DX7 + v-reg + lipo. This thread is about me upgrading my DX7's voltage regulator to a switching regulator and using a lipo in it. Besides many guys run a diode or 2 on their lipos, so they won't have the same problem you had.
