Damn, wings are ready! More work than I thought it would be, but I'm happy with them.
First off, I had to get some servo's for the flaps. I picked a pair of Hyperion hp-d509-gmd. Next up I installed the airspeed/mag sensor in the leading edge of the left wing about a foot out from the fuselage. Taped over everything and taped both sides of both the flap and aileron compressed foam hinges. Next, I added more glue to the carbon fiber rods on the bottom of the wing, for security of mind, then taped over those grooves to smooth out the air flow. I also installed a cf tube to stiffen up the flaps. Though they are thicker than the ailerons it seemed like a good idea to me. Last off, I added tape to the leading edge of the wings to help protect them. Got to get back to the Ruby installation. I might need to pull out my exuhf receiver. I need to hook up to the program and make a ppm change to it so all control runs thru one servo cable, Unfortunately, an antenna is in the way of the ups port, thus the removal. It's not exactly the easiest thing to get in there as the antennas have to be rigidly fixed before installation. All the other sensors are mounted. Don't look like I'll get around to flying her tomorrow, but that was optimistic on my part. The deal now it to make sure everything, wire wise, is correct the first time out.

Thanks, Andrew. It's fun.
EZuhf is now all programmed and reinstalled. Now capable of controlling 10 channels. Two of them are 'ghost channels' used to transmit rssi data. Ruby is installed and wired up, except I'm short 2 servo extensions for my pan and tilt. So, I ordered some more cables along with pins, (I do like building my own ), and a pair of battery connectors, one with surge suppressor for the main battery's. Another for the fpv battery. The system will now be armed thru the exterior. Also, ordered another pair of 4s 5300mah battery's from Gens Ace. That will now give me either 3 flights with the Hexa packing 2 battery's or 2 flights in the Ranger with 3 battery's. The gps I installed in that totally useless squared off camera compartment in the nose. I cut a block of some nice cellular foam and sandwiched it inside that and servo taped the foam block in that now not so useless compartment. In the event of a nose in crash, the battery's are higher than the foam block. Looks like all I now have left is to Is finish up the wiring of the vtx system to the Ruby osd card, finish up the primary wiring once the parts arrive, and I'll be ready to power on! When that happens, and I have her de-bugged, then I do the Ruby configuration dance, send Uthere the file. They send back a file for the maiden flight. So, with luck, I can hopefully pull off the maiden next weekend when I'm off. Long range weather forecast looks good,!

All things considered, I'm pretty happy with the process.
Got the osd cabling all made up and installed. That's the last of the big install's. Monday, the rest of the cabling arrives, so can't mount the Ruby permanently until then, but that's a small project. Nothing special about the mounting. Just got to keep the axis level with level flight. I'll secure it to the side of the fuselage using Ziel tape. Got a few niggling items to clean up and do still. Will do some of those tonight to get them out of the way.

Hmmm, seem to get a lot of work done when you stay sober.
Dug out a couple servo wires from the Penguin and finished installing the Ruby. Took some time as I decided to put inline an lc filter for the Ruby. Had an extra one so thought what the hell. You'll notice wrapped around the Ruby sandwich a Velcro strap I cut down and fitted to it, just for safety. This thing was so nice to work on inside. Plenty of room for a ton of stuff, not to mention battery capacity out the yahoo. I It allowed me to mount everything on the sides keeping the battery tray clean.

This is it for the day, time to put her away until Wednesday.
Taped up the rudder and elevator hinges. I feel much safer now. Also, taped up the entire leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer, wrapping the sharp corner where it's the thinnest. These always end up bouncing on stuff. Just an attempt to help protect it. The wiring on this side is just temporary until I see about the arming ports. Just another one of those damn little details to deal with. Weather report still looks good for this weekend. Good thing too as we are suppose to get snow tonight and last thru early Monday. Mountains are suppose to get around 20 inches!

Well, my back hurts, so I'll take a break.
I'm now ready for power up of both systems! For a quick reference for my fingers, I glued a couple round head servo screws into the bottom of each wing at the cg point. Put 2 4s 5300mah battery's in her along with the 12v 800mah fpv battery and figured out the balance. Time to cross my fingers!

My power up plan involves the fpv side of things first. As this is a 1 watt tx heat build up happens pretty damn quick. Lawmate has 2 ceramic heat sinks for some serious heat dissipation.
So, I'll do a power up to ensure it is transmitting and receiving first. However, in order to do this I first have to finish up the mods to the ground station. Not much to tell. Drill a hole to mount the antenna, mount the receiver and plug everything in. Didn't forget to plug back into the tracker and loose the info I think that was messing me up. If not, then I'll reload the programming without saving my settings and start from scratch. Might also mention I have glued down the canopy onto the deck. Good thing, too! The nose of the deck is pretty damn thin and can be easily damaged when removing it from the fuselage but the canopy glued on makes it pretty damn solid. Plus, it makes the plane look sexy! The electronic board is an led for Ruby status. Now I just got to do the power on test, I'm ready!

Final wiring check completed.
Installed the arming plugs. Too damn late to test now, need some sleep. Will do after I wake up.

Ok, power on went ok, no smoke on anything.
Just another learning curve to overcome. Upon power up, all I got was one beep on the motor, no response to any controls. Spent hours, ripping things apart, checking wires, crap like that. Couldn't find a thing wrong. Strange thing, the mode selector switch worked, as when I switch modes the damn thing started beeping at me until I went back to manual mode. So, thinking I was nuts, I sent Jim an email and a copy of the file it generated. Seems my wiring is just fine, he needs to make changes to the firmware. Loaded the new file and the motor works, ailerons work, but nothing else. So, sent another file to him, waiting to hear back now. Keep in mind this is a USA based company and it's midnight!!!

Ahhh shazbat! Got one flap not responding!
It's been a little bit of a battle, but to be honest, the support service you pay for with your first purchase only, is worth it's weight in gold!!! I must have sent off at least 10 emails to Jim, and every time his prognosis has been spot on. Prompt response, just unbelievable! Anyway, back to my left flap. once again, it's my damn fault. I forgot to install a jumper board. Worst yet, now I can't find it! Oh well, a quick email to Jim will get me sorted. Just so damn close now! Missed this time off period to do a maiden, but that's ok. Plenty of time left. Don't want to make a single mistake. That's the whole beauty of this system, you don't got to do but what the 'f' your told. Back to work tomorrow for 2 nights, then 3 more days to get her done, hopefully.

One step closer!
Got the board in to bridge high load power from the expander to the port on the Ruby that controls one of the flaps. This prevents hi loads from routing in the Ruby. Now everything works. Did the Ruby dance and sent the file to Jim. When I wake up I'll then have a flyable configuration file. From there, I then need to do a self calibration dance to calibrate the Ruby for my mounting position, , do the preflight check, , and if all is good it can then fly. All of this will have to be done each time I send a file to Jim, but it shouldn't take very many flights to dial her in. Time is getting short! Just 15 days left. Still, I think I can pull this off,,, if the damn weather permits. Been raining for 2 days and is expected to for the rest of the week. It's going to be close. Looks like what I did to my tracker took care of its issue. It's ready for testing.

Well, got the file back, and the plane is now ready for ground testing. With a little cooperation from mother nature, hopefully I can get all systems to play nice with each other.
Learned an interesting trick. All this messing about puts the few in evadible dents in the foam wings. This upset me, being such a new plane. I took my old monokote iron, set it on 4, put a wet paper towel over the dents and ironed them back out. Worked a treat!

She looks fantastic Tom All dressed up and nowhere to go!!
I have to say, with a proper look at it, I thought the antenna position looks a little precarious, being so close behind the prop, and couldn't the signal get blocked on the return home being right behind the fuse? But then looking at alternatives, I guess that's the safest place for it to go, and it is wide enough to put the signal either side of the fuse. I guessed the only other place it would fit is underneath the landing gear, but then I guess it's at greater risk of being ripped off when landing?? Hope weather improves for you soon, can wait to see some footage. Same weather here, not due a good break until Monday. Maybe the odd bright spell. So unless something happens with work, I'll be getting my shovel out and burying cable after the weeknd!!

Oh man, I already love this Ruby!
Jim informed me that the last file showed I hadn't set up my failsafe correctly, which I hadn't set at all yet. The Ruby looks for a low throttle setting beyond the motor off position. All I had to do was to turn on the transmitter, take throttle trim all the way down, place the mode select switch in auto mode, link up with the plane, then with ezuhf set to low power, push the failsafe button until the ezuhf beeps. Unplug the plane, move my trim back to zero and turn off the transmitter. I run a separate battery for the ezuhf transmitter, a 3s 2500mah lipo, for maximum transmission power., and the 2.4ghz transmission selected off in the Futaba so consumption is minimal. The whole system is then protected with this simple falisafe. Any transmission loss, no matter the cause, of more than 1 second and the Ruby takes over full command, climbs to 350 feet and comes home. There it will loiter until I take back command, or when the low voltage setting in the Ruby is reached it will auto land the plane. The method works well on the Hexa failsafe, also, and as you have witnessed in past vids, works exceptionally well. For the trip, I've ordered another spare battery for the GoPro, ( was on sale for $10 ), and a cigarette adapter to charge the camera battery's. I also ordered a spare nicd tx pack for the Futaba, at 2500mah. The stock one is 1700mah. The t8fg transmitter does not play well with a lipo, so stuck with what does. For my field charging needs I have a charger with battery post clamps. My buddy's Tahoe runs 2 battery's, ( he likes his beer cold, and has a portable frig ). I'll just hook up to the spare battery to recharge my packs. Just need to remember to start the Tahoe after a couple charges. Still got to calibrate the sensors, easy enough, but needs to be done outside and in no wind so as to disturb the airspeed/mag sensors. Right now it's storming, so won't even try. Maybe by morning. After that is just pre-flight. If Ruby likes everything it will flash a green light and wag it's elevator. If not, a red light and wag the aileron's. If all good, then it's time to fly! Got to work this weekend, but the following 2 days looks great weather wise!
