Default mSR X Brushless Mod

I don't know if there is much intrest in such an expensive upgrade, in relation to the cost of a stock mSR X, but after 5 dead mains and counting i can certianly justify mine.

To date there is a working prototype in Germany by the folks at Nanoheli

As well, there is at least one Helifreak member that i know of that is working on one.

If you don't know anything about brushless setups there is a great write up here to get you started:

Capi's Brushless Motor and ESC 101
https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=64727

And the mSR Brushless mod as a comparison is well documented

Blade MSR brushless build (or: increasing throttle respond...lol)
https://www.helifreak.com/showthread...ight=brushless

Let's Hot Rod this bird and be done with unreliable stock motors.

I cant even get out of "Granny" mode at 75% throttle D/R and 60% on the controls!
But i do have two MSRX's so i have a new one to fly after i beat this one half to death learning to fly it.

Thats alot of soldering on that board, Im pretty sure i could do it but id think most people would need some previous experiance.
What about the tail? Are they doing brushless on that also? If not your gonna need some power back there, But i can recommend the 7mm upgrade which should be more than capable in keeping up. Id still recommend a heatsink and flipping the motor ALA MCPX style for better cooling.
Dual 6mm is to heavy imo and the single 6mm with a v3 rotor may work tho.

Keep us updated as i find this very interesting.

James,
i like that lets fry this bird and call it turkey

Dasfriek all for one, one for all brushless tail and we could call it the mad hornet , green lantern or angry wasp.

still happy with my 28.5 oz with battery flew it today for 5 packs without the canopy talk about fast~
Silver bullet

and you were right every gram less makes it harder to control

$15 for thesteve converter board. Takes the motor signal and translates to PWM that an esc will understand.
Looking at motors and escs now, figure under 40 for the pair. Of course I just get 2 of everything in case something is bad out of the box, not uncommon with the level of motor/esc that I'm looking at, so double all those numbers.
Then there is pinion and mount. I can machine something for the mount, but I don't want to cut gears. I've seen a couple out there, just need the kv of the not yet chosen motor. Then again the gear drive is rather noisy.....
The nano heli one is a great starting point. I'd love to do better on the flight duration part, seems lower than I would expect based on a casual perusal of the numbers. I'll do more math later to confirm.

would you get better flight times with a higher RPM inrunner? or is it better to use the torque of an outrunner because it's FP?

There don't seem to be a lot of choices if you want to stay lightweight and single cell, at least working with the stock drive system.
If you do a custom drive, you can get around lower kv as long as it's made up with a reasonable kt. It would be real nice to see torque curves too, but that's not gonna happen any time soon. I'm weighing various options carefully at this point.

I gotta admit the stock MSRX is too much heli for me even at 75% throttle D/R and 60% on the controls for indoor flight. Just going to stock settings outdoors will be more than fast enough for me also.
I need a Brushless mSR more than one in a MSRX, Dang that motor is so weak that even going to a 180mAH battery slows it down at least 25% on power.

But ill definitely be watching this thread for good info as you never know when you may need it.

Default Blade MSR X Brushless Mod

Hi everyone,
I'm a new member to this site that I came across with my search for info on the brushless msr x. Anyway, I've converted my msr x to main brushless and using the Mcpx v2 tail blade, which makes a world of difference. Here is some pictures of my mod heli. I've flown it and it flies very stable with lots of power to spare. Since there is a lot of power to spare, I've decided to switch the msr x body and use a nice scale body from Mia-Microflight. I will post a video soon.

Welcome Hellimod,

That's a very tidy setup, nice workI'm waiting on my converter and esc in the mail... I have to ask, what motor did you select? the ap03 i've been looking at has a mount on the other side (top). Yours appears to mount from the bottom via a custom plate.

Im very impressed with the work you done Helimod.
More power, Less power consumption and adding reliability to the sad motors that come stock and also not having to add weight with aluminum heatsinks. Its made of "WIN" all the way around.

Did you make the motor mount yourself?
My fat pig of a heli could really go on a diet if i went brushless with it, And even if i didn't get every last gram off of it that wouldn't matter as much with the added power.

Is there an exact link to a thread anywhere you may have done showing the work as you went or a guide you followed?
What about basic final costs of the mod?

What about the tail? That looks like a stock 6mm motor and V3 blade, Any heat related issues with it? Are there possible brushless mods available for it also?
With the added power do you find yourself wishing for more tail holding power say from a 7mm mod back there?

Anyhow, Congrats! I love the work.
Not big on the body, But that just a personal preference.

Nice work, where did you connect the famous "yellow wire"?

I've had a "thesteve" for my mcpx for a couple of months, I'm just not keen on the prospect of potentially wrecking a board soldering to the output of the mcu

One thing is for sure, You know how to fly the MSRX very well.
So about that motor mount, You make it or buy it?

I made the motor mount out of a thin piece of carbon fiber. Have to trim the stock frame a little bit. I don't think they have any aftermarket frame yet and probably never will.

For this mod, I used the 11000 kv C05/ADH50 that weigh 3.8g. I think the AP03 might be a little low in torque since this is an airplane "AP" motor with around 8000kv. I used a 9t pinion but a 10t will probably work just as good or even better.

This is a very tempting mod if i only could practice more and get better at flying.
But id love more power and get rid of the heatsinks. I can cut CF with my dremel and i have enough skill for the soldering so only $$$ is holding me back.

Is there any way you could post the main items purchased for the mod and possibly a link?
Im guessing Astroid may carry all the parts? I know WowHobbies has the kits too.
What cells are your using? 1S or 2S? mAH?

What about a brushless tail since those burn up also? Too much weight?
I cant say for sure id do this, But it looks fun and i have some pretty good soldering skills.
Thanks,
Don
