Default new to Gaui's, have a chance to buy 2 of the 550's sold at IRCHA

Been flying trex450's and building a trex500. Have a chance to get 2 of the gaui 550s sold at IRCHA (50$)'. Good idea or not? Have the 550's held up or should I stick with my trex500 build. Sounds like people have lost interest in the 550's. Any reason why I should stick to my trex path? I'm Kinda new to heli's.

Get both. It's good exposure.

the 5000mah battery may be a little big to fit under the ol canopy... i know guys have successfully fit 4000mah lipos but i've never heard of anyone using a 5000 without having to mod something (although i could be toootally wrong...) anyone else chime in??

No, i was think the same. Now i have this canopy and it's very large for h550. This give very poor visual efect. I wish to sell it. :/ Unfortunely better way is cutting place for motor in stock canopy :/

My power system now:

Z-power Z30A 1100kV, ESC: HW pentium 80A opto (ESC similar to turnigy) - 12T pinion (i dont kwon manufacturer. I buy it in local helishop)
20T OWB - rest like in stock: 42T - 61T
For Serwos and Rx power supply i have two becs, 5A each. One give 5A for swash servos - straight for Rx - one give power for tail set - jr770t+futaba s9254 - i make one small connector for this - really no problem here. These BECs have additinal batery 3S 2200mAh! Z-power with 80A pentium opto have another bateries - 2x3S 2200mAh
For 3d i have 500mm blades
Heli is more weight - 2250g but only this setup give right power for digital servos ds 821. Its flying with white paddles like flybarless! Have very quick cyclic response.
I was fly now only few flyigths with this setup but i'm shocked. This is this heli now!
I don't wish no more for happiness

Flying time is 3,40 - 4 min, it depend flying style, this is with straight 90% throtle curve

Here's my current Setup:

Scorpion 4020-910kv
Hobbywing 80a OPTO
16/50/20/61 (9.53:1)
Blue Lipo 3300mah 6s 35c

95-90-95. 2000-2100 rpm on 550mm

This motor is POWERFUL! it outperforms the Z-30 imo. Price is about the same too, cant beat that.

Not sure of the traffic here , but here goes.
Building 425 kit with longer tail and 500 wood blades.
The blades recomend 1900 rpm max.
I want to set up for learning hover..no 3d etc.
Read some of these posts and ended up with a Hyperion HS3026-1400.

Now after reading a bit more, it seems this is a good high performance motor,
but can it be tamed down for training?
The only thing i figured to lower the speed would be 5c setup at a lower voltage.
Can the motor be "muted" with an ICE esc. and computer?
Dont have the ESC yet....any recomended......
I got a nice motor, servos, gyro , with plans of putting in another kit when I re-kit this one and salvage the bits!

Or do I just get a metal head and new CF blades, and run higher rpm? Can I get the thing in the air with what I have?

Thanks, Jim

PS first newb post must come sometime!

...it's really up to you want you want to do...with that motor, You would need to run a 13t pinion and 60t front main gear / 19t OWB 61 rear gear...that would give you around 2000head speed....just right for 500mm blades(wood or or CF/GF) 550 blades too.
It will be docile enough for learning orientations and into FF.
14/50 will give you approx 2300 HS = HOT SET UP! Caution advised!

Hi Jim,
You don't need to run 5s batteries to reduce the head speed for running longer blades. You can lower the head speed with gear changes. Running a 14T pinion and a 60T primary gear instead of the 50T would get you somewhere around 2000 rpm at 100% throttle. ( This is calculated, not always exact due to motor efficiency rating). You could then set your throttle curve so it is at 85 or 90% at max stick positions. You could also use a 13T pinion with the 60T primary and get somewhere around 1800 to 1900. ( Calculated ).

As far as speed controllers, there are a lot of choices out there. I use stock Gaui and Align esc's in all of my Hurris and have not had any problems with them yet. I have used HobbyWing esc's in my smaller helicopters with good results too, but haven't used their higher amp rated ones so can't comment on them. Check the max amp draw rating for your motor and get an esc that is rated a little higher to be on the safe side. I use an Align 75amp esc in my 500mm bladed Hurri, coupled to a Z-Power Z30-1100kv motor.

When you are ready to upgrade to more power and performance, you can just re-gear for a higher head speed, install the " Ultimate Performance Upgrade Kit" ( G-204500) that includes cnc rotor yoke and blade grips, and some FRP or CF blades.

Hope this helps some.

P.S. If you find that you have more questions about your build, you might want to just start a new thread and ask them there as you will likely get more responses.

Jerry

EDIT, Guess I was typing at the same time PT was, lol. But he beat me to the response.

As the other guys have said - 1800 to 1900 would be ideal for learning. As regards ESCs I would go for the Turnigy 100amp ESC http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...hless_ESC.html it is a re-brand of the HobbyWing Platinum that Gaui also re-brand and use on the X5. If you get this programmer http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...less_ESC_.html you can upgrade the firmware and get an excellent soft start (standard is supposed to be good)
