The nylon is easy to work but difficult to get a nice finish on. After belt sanding to shape I edge scraped with a very sharp knife to put a reasonable surface on it. The beauty? Indistructable!

another nice thing about nylon... it can be dyed to just about any color you want

Rit fabric dye works well.

In the old days I used to dye my nylon props for control line.

believe it or not.. but regular RIT dye will work..the guy that makes super skids has used it for dying his skids.. 10 minutes in the dye and presto.. bright yellow skids.. of course they make a full range of colors and your mileage may vary

Heli fliers are full of do it yourselfers! I have a buddy who is a crew chief for the class below indy car and he saves me all his busted flat pieces of carbon, so I generally cut my own carbon fins and plates.

What about UHMW polyethylene? It is likely far more abundant than actual nylon. I don't think it is as hygrophobic as nylon so would not likely take in any dye. What I used for the fin is likely UHMWP.

I actually meant it is more hygrophobic, or less likely to absorb water. I could have said It is less hygroscopic. Not Canadian words, just words used to describe if a plastic, or anything , will absorb or repel water. If it is totally hygrophobic it will not absorb any dye and will not take on any colour. Nylon is hygroscopic and will dye very well. Some Canadian words are, backbacon, real beer, skookum, as in "A Bergan is a skookum heli, meaning robust or strong and large. Skookumchicks are ample girls. I hear "damnthumbs" around here quite a bit but believe the term is universal.

Hows the flying wx up there? Got to 55 f today and just got back from about 5 flights with the 550....did my first loops, rolls, and even an immelman...and a few flips...

This heli makes me look MUCH better than I am....I love it...

My ECO will be just a cruiser...

48 and sunny so I got my 550 out for two flights and then I went for a 15 mile mountain bike ride in the forest.. Now I will try to get a couple more flights in before the rain starts. South west BC can be quite mild in the winter with snow only at high elevations, but still it is a rain forest. The rest of Canada is typically much colder with a real winter. I've been to the south east USA in the winter and I am sure you get a lot more heli days than I do. I could stand a month on the gulf coast to warm up!!

Hygro is Greek from hygros or "hugros" meaning moist. The terms Hydro and Hygro are interchangable and both used to refer to a plastics ability to absorb water molecules.

ooohhh. now that's a good day! my specialized has been garaged since november and i'm DYING to go for a spin. too damn cold here to even consider it. today it's going to be in the 30's so i might put a few packs through it. monday, 45f and sunny so maybe i'll get a 10 mile ride in.

Check the dictionary. In some uses hydro and hygro are interchangeable, in others they aren't.

If I was writing a thesis for my doctorate I would "check the dictionary". This is helifreak and I was simply trying to discuss if a certain plastic would absorb dye or not. Does spelling count?

First really good weekend we have had here in months...wife went away for the weekend. 55 f on Sat and 62 f today, Sun....

Was able to get 4 flights in SAT morning...recharge and get two more in the afternoon....and today got another 4 flights....!! Man what a GREAT weekend....

Can't wait to retire AGAIN, so I can fly any day I want during the week...our AMA field only allows mon - fri 0800 - 1500 for flying....really sucks but it is run by the metro park department....and they did just build us a really nice 200 ft paved runway and they are bringing in power and a pavillion.... so can't complain too much...we have to share with the soccer fields due to we fly directly over the soccer fields if kids are playing.

the only way to tell if the nylon is going to hold the dye of not is to try it.. it may take a longer soak to get the dye to take but it still should take it.

The dyeing (actually the hot water) makes the nylon less brittle also.
