Default soldering wires on tail motor ?

Hi.... got a hollow upgraded tailboom, I wanted to run the wires inside but I see I will have to cut the connector off then solder it back on. Can those flimsey wires even be solder back together? thanks

Hi,

Yes, I do it all the time. Use a low power solder iron so you don't melt the wire insulation.
10-15W is pretty good to use.

It is better to unsolder the wires rather than cut them off. That way they are already tinned when you come to solder them back on. Slice the existing heat shrink carefully along its length with a sharp blade to get it off and don't forget to put some new heat shrink over the wires before you solder them back on.

Incidentally, a hollow boom would not usually be regarded as an upgrade

Solid 2mm or 3mm CF tail boom is your best bet, hard to beat/break and much cheaper than OEM.

You will find that aluminium is not necessarily better than plastic. It may just be bling

I'm interested in this one, as I just got some solid 2mm CF rod to do the extended boom mod, plus some CAT5 wire to replace stock tail motor wire.

My question is... When I un-solder the old wires from the motor, and the plug, then I prepare to solder in the new CAT5 wires, how do I know which is pos and neg ?
Both the stock wires are the same colour. I don't want to solder it back up with my new wires, to find my tail motor spins in reverse !!

I just did it last night. Incidentally I used a heat sink on the connector pins to conduct the extra heat away so it didn't melt the connector plastic or damage the tiny magnet wires.. (I used a hemostat clamped on the connector pins as the heat sink.)

It does not matter which way round you solder the wires. No harm will occur and if you get it wrong just reverse the plug in the 3 in 1.

I am surprised that both of your stock wires are the same colour. Are you sure ?

I just soldered on cat 5 wires too. I snapped the tail in half and wanted to keep flying while I order CF rod I made a new boom from a coat hanger. It is a little heavier than stock, but I'm back in the air for free.

lol please post a picture i will be forever great-full.

Any also it dosent matter what way you solder the wires onto the connector, if it spins hard on startup, you plugged it in backwards, just plug it in the opposite and all will be fine, you wont damage the heli or board by plugging your tail motor in wrong, just dont try to fly it that way!

Both extending the tail and soldering the wires are great improvements to the mCP X, and I totally recommend them.

Here some pictures of how to extend the tail and solder the wires to the board!

Here is my CH tail boom mod. The CH is smaller than the stock boom so I coated both ends with gap filling CA, let it dry and sanded till I got the right diameter. Yes,CH stands for "coat hanger". To keep the cat 5 wire as short as possible I ran it straight and tied it to the boom with the original wire.

I had to trim my radio by one click forward cyclic after the mod.

The trick to soldering to the board is to have whatever your attaching pre-tinned. I just put flux on the object(wire, metal connector)and dip it into melted solder until it is coated. Now it is just a matter of holding it in place and touching it with a iron for a few seconds. This method shortens the heat transference to the board.

Indeed you are right !!

I wasn't looking closely enough !! My tail wires are different colours !!

Glad it doesn't really matter which way round the wires go, if you are using a plug onto the board.

As soon as stock tail boom gets damaged, its boom mod time !!

Cheers for the info !!

Just don't run the tail too long in reverse because the brushes in the motor are designed to run best in one direction. Long enough to find that you have got it wrong is OK though. Just don't put hot glue on the plug until you know you you have got it the right way !

So...total noob question...which direction is the tail motor supposed to spin? I put on the cat5, and never paid attention to the direction.

if your looking at the right side of the heli, the tail should spin counter clockwise.

Air is pushed AWAY from the tail boom and towards you.
