I've spent a lot of time on both Futaba and JR. Both are great reliable products and I don't find the programming on either to be difficult.

Try doing it totally mechanically. Now that's tedious! Fortunatly, I came into the hobby at a time when those kinds of setups were on their way out (because the radios were starting to add the features we take for granted now) but I still had to deal with it on the first couple of helicopters I owned. I learned a lot though!
