I'm located in Suffolk County.
See my signature below for the equipment I own/fly.
I have the Phoenix sim but am having a hard time configuring it; seems like the sim settings and the TX settings are colliding.

The 'swash' setting needs to be "one servo", otherwise it will not work.

Where in suffolk? The closest club to you is probably Coram, but I'm not sure... if you are way out there, there may be another club which is closer.

Best advice I can give it get that sim going and practice as much as you can. If you would like to buddy box with somebody, you need to at least be able to do some basic flight. It’s a little different with helicopters in this respect because things can get sticky a lot faster than they can with airplanes.

Yeah, I'm near Coram. Flew there when I was kid in the 80's.
I'll try to get the sim going again.

I started out on RC Groups.com and it was pretty dull. Then I came to learn about this forum and I must say that it has really been great!
There will be no substitute for getting with a local club and receiving some hands on help from an experienced enthusiast - I'm working on that and trying to get some lessons from a pro.
I bought the eBooks from rchelicopterfun.com and they have been a HUGE win for me. Excellent way to get started and a great reference. The author also has videos on YouTube to support his work in the books. He did an awesome job. So I recommend them highly.
I first started with a Blade mCX2 but outgrew it in a month. Then, I bought the 450 RTF with the DX6i because it was a great combo deal. I soon learned that i was in way over my head. So I took a step back and bought an mSRX. I used John's ebook to get me through setting it up and flying it. But the mSRX has some weirdness to it when it comes to FFF which I found to be a pain. So I bought an mCPX. The mSRX really does fly very much like an CP Heli and got me hovering in all orientations. The mCPX is a great, tough, little CP Heli that all the pros seem to keep in their pocket and play with. After flying the mCPX for a bit, I went back and started hovering the 450 no problem! I am having some mechanical bugs to shake out but am learning a great deal about setup and maintenance.
Now, I just need to hook up with a pro for some flight lessons. I'm a commercially licensed pilot and I fly a light twin, so I'm not entirely in the dark with it all. But RC stuff is different and I don't want to develop any bad habits.
So that's my saga.

I'm also in Suffolk County on Long Island. I am pretty new to the helicopter repair hobby, so far I have only been hovering in the back yard, trying to get comfortable with different orientations on the sim etc.

I first got a cheap fixed pitch (exceed falcon 2), learned to hover tail in and wanted something more. So I got the Trex 450 RTF kit, which I find to be much more stable to hover. I also have a Genius CP that I was hoping would be more suitable for backyard flying, so far I'm finding it a bit hard to control.

I find myself working a lot, so my flying time is a bit limited. Weather permitting, I will typically fly 2-3 packs in the back yard after work, and some on the sim whenever I can.

It's tough. Family and work has made it so difficult for me to make the time to get down to the flying field in Coram. I reached out to Frank Columbia and he welcomed me to come on down for lessons. I had to cancel because my kid fell off a horse. Ever since then, it's been one thing after the other.
I recommend the John Salt ebooks at rchelicopterfun.com. They are geared for the newbie just getting started. His ebooks explain all the setup, repair and maintenance tasks involved. I have been spending this whole past year reading and learning so I can repair my Blade 450 and set it up again. In addition, I gutted an old office and turned it in to my heli man-cave!
I have been flying my mCPX which I love! The wife just got me a DX8 for my birthday which is an order of magnitude better radio than the DX6i that came with the 450. I'll be ebay'ing my DX6i soon.
I have my eye on building something this winter - either a TREX 550E V2 or a the new Goblin 500 that will be coming out. I can soften the response tremendously with the DX8 so I'm not afraid of getting in to a very capable bird. The Goblin is very simple in design and looks like a snap to repair. That's what I like about it. So we'll see.
I'd try to make the time to get down to the heli field on a Sunday. That's what I am trying to do. Of course I have something going on with the kids today, so I won't be able to make it down. Again.

Hey, from Coram here too. I am about to go down to the field where H.E.L.I. meets. I go there every once in a while. I am also new to the hobby and find just going there to talk and watch the guys helps alot. I am flying a trex 450 and phoenix has helped me out alot. Maybe all us noobs from long island can get together one day. Set something up with the HELI club or something. What do you think?

I'd love to link up with all the noobs at the field! I just got back from there and it was a lot of fun!
Mark was very very helpful; got my Blade 450 all trimmed out for me. My configuration was very close. So I was happy about that. I feel like I'm on the right path and visiting the local club definitely has given me more confidence.
I'll be heading down to Elwood Hobbies in Northport to join the club. Al said they meet the second Thursday of the month over there.
Keep in touch and I'll see you at the field!

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Can one just show up at the field, or do you need some sort of guest access? Would anyone be flying tomorrow (Labor Day)?
