OS Hyper .50 Muffler recommendations
I am currently trying to figure out what the best pipe to use with my .50 Hyper that will allow the engine to run the best.
The 2 pipes I have are the Stock OS .50 tuned pipe and I also have the Revolution .50 quiet pipe. I am running the revolution but I tend to loose oomph on inverted transitions back and forth and can over-rev on the down line. 50 % pitch. I have adjusted the pitch curve down to 80% at mid stick on Idle 1 in hopes that will reduce some of that problem. What I would like to know now is if, I can get more Compression, Less loss of power with a different pipe, Say the CY MP-5 or Align .50 pipe - something of that nature. I am doing more 3D now and want the best combo for my engine. I am also running my engine at 1 3/4 turns out on carb needle. Is that pushing it on the mixture for this engine. Thanks in advance from high altitude Colorado

I would reccomend either a CY MP-5 or the Fun Tech A395. Both pipes produce great power but are louder than the Rev pipe you are currently using. I am running an MP-2 on a Hyper 50 (just too cheap to buy a new pipe) and it rocks.
As for tuning, I can't tell you if your needle settings are good or not, as I am not far from sea level. But when tuning look for good smoke (under heavy load, need to get into the high speed needle), listen to the engine (shouldn't sound too pissed off), and feel the temp from the back plate (10 sec. is the general rule). Do you run a governor or rev-limiter? They are not a bad idea for the 3D pilot.

Hello,
There is some preference and budget-view in choosing a muffler. Let's look at the widest spread different mufflers: - price-performance mufflers: CY MP5 50 SB (my favorite on OS-50/ YS-50), Outrage 50 muffler and Funtech A395 (this one might even work great later on an OS-55 - might depend the version used) - Align muffler: mid range pricing, good power and tuneability is ok, uncivilized noise and earlier mufflers tended to brake inside .. (latter issue solved I guess) - expensive mufflers: Boby Watts OS-50 edition, GP 50 mufflers and generally Hatori mufflers for your engine Don't get blinded too much about the saying ".. if it costs less it must be worth less .. " .. it's all about getting someones name and face on a product-packaging and people are willing to pay twice as much. Considering most people are no professionals to get out the most of their engines, any of the mufflers above will give good results with your OS when tuned well. Using a governor is a good idea, but de-activate the governor at the beginning when you are tuning your engine (carb needles) - else gov will hide some carb setting deficiencies. If you do not want to buy/ use a governor, use your Tx-Software - feature called swash-to-throttle mixing.. Best Regards, Oliver P.S: swash-to-throttle mixing: don't be afraid to use pretty high values >> 30% |

If you are looking for something quiet, easy to tune and just works then I highly recommend the Klone muffler from helikraft.com . It's something between the standart TT muffler and performance mufflers. It's so quiet that you can't tell if the engine idles . Performance is good too.
If you are for the 3D love and just want to get performance out of your engine then again I will recommend CY Muscle pipe 5 SB . Do not forget every tuned pipe will make it harder for you to tune your engine. That being said Os 50 hyper is by far the easiest engine to tune.

PhnX, Raptor30_V1,Broken - All excellent tidbits and I appreciate the info.
It looks like I can be safe with looking into a few pipe ranges and still come out ok. Broken - Yes I have a Govenor - I use the Fut GV-1. At this time though, I took off the sensor off as it was not reading correctly. Until I purchase a new sensor, $40.00 or go with a different style - Rev Limiter etc, I am using throttle curves. This is why I believe I am getting the Over rev'ing on the down lines. I was looking at your recommendation of the CY MP-5 and that might be the way to go but does have a price attached and was wondering if that was really needed before I go that route. I do really love the quiet sound of the revolution, but I believe it just not giving me what I am needing in performance. "(shouldn't sound too pissed off)," Good point and Boy it sure does at the aforementioned above. But I do have smoke. Went through 1 hyper engine already and want to make sure I do not fry this one. Raptor30_V1 - No Tic Tocs here, No Boby Watts pipe. Im not that extreme in needing perfection on my engine. I was considering the Align as well and heard the issues of the baffles breaking off alot. Glad to here it "May" be resolved. Im a penny pincher to some sorts. But now that my heli progression is coming along nicely. I am feeling the underpower on some things I want too do - so I guess I have to match the product to the performance.. You have hit the nail on the head with this statement" P.S: swash-to-throttle mixing: don't be afraid to use pretty high values >> 30%" I never thought about that and Im setting them as I type, Reading up on it and found invaluable info. This will allow better throttle management. PhnX - Klone looks like a good one as well. I see it here http://www.mockingbirdrc.com/product...oducts_id=2071 $91.80 - Looks like it might be a tossup, to the big 3, Ill waive the differences on your recommendations to power output and go from there. "If you are for the 3D love" - I would not say that, More into the Curcuit, pattern and entry level 3D Inverted stuff, Tight Inverted transition rolls, I dont know any tech jargins yet. Thanks all and Ill post my pruchase and performance changes. Thank you very much!!

I have one and quite like it, that said I am new to nitro heli's and don't have much to compare it too, but have had ZERO issues in setting up my heli with the OS50 hyper that it is attached to, so you could say that is is a pretty foolproof set up with that motor and muffler combo - as I got it to work ok!! |
