I like electrics, but the battery costs would be way expensive on a 90. The battery for one of those would be at least $600. You can buy approximately 24 gallons of cool power 30% for $600, and that's just for 1 battery. You want at least 2. So for 2 batterys you could buy approximately 48 gallons of cool power 30%.

You could easily use two 6s 4900 packs from a 600 or similar. Maybe even 10s would work for the sport flyer.

Well I'm just stating that I would rather spend $600 on fuel than a battery.

I'd get one too... in a heart beat. I got my very first nitro heli and yet I still like the electric ones better.

I would definitely consider getting one. I used to have a few Ion-X machines and once you go 90-E, it is hard to do 50-E and get the same excitement level.

As many flights as it would take to have you $600 battery lose power and have to buy a new one.

Here's a question...

7Kg is the max. legal flying weight in the UK. My logo 600 weighs in at 3.6.

I wonder what sort of helicopter you would get if you decided to build the biggest possible aerobatic machine within that limit.

Working on the cube-root of 2, I reckon 790-820mm blades. Probably about 15S 8000.

I wouldn't want to pay for it, but I'd like to watch it fly.

I converted a Raptor 90SE to 12s with a Neu 1915/1Y motor and it was the most amazing bird I've ever flown. Unbelievable power and good flight times too. Now the bad part... I lost it all when the GY-401 let loose doing a hurricane. I lost 2x $300 6S-5000mah Thunder Power Extremes, one actually went up in flames, the $225 Neu motor, a $220 Castle Creations HV-110 controller and the heli was a total. The first thing I bought afterwards was a 611... too bad it was just a little too late. But the point is... big electrics fly great, there's just a lot of money flying up there!

Is this also taking into account the possibility of loosing a pack/s from a crash? At this level I'd say I'll secure my flight time (fuel) on the ground in my gallon container. What will you loose if you pile in a nitro,?.. sure the heli, but only 500-600oz of fuel..not an expensive battery. You got more $$$ in the air. It's just a thought.
Also, when I bought my 500 I thought I'd use my 3S pack in series but quickly went to 6S. It was for me, a pain and twice the charging for one flight. That got old fast. I'd imagine the same would be the case here, in my opinion.

I do like electric. They are clean and sound great in the air. You can really hear them working. I think I'd go with the nitro for what I've said though.

There is also another thing to consider on the Glow/E debate. At my local field, you can only fly Glow on I think now 4 days a week, down from 6 a year ago. On Wednesdays you can only fly Glow from Noon to 4 or 5PM I think I read as well. I know Finless has to drive a lot farther to fly his glow machines because there is no glow allowed at his local field. At the rate our local field is going, even the older plane flyers are moving to more E powered planes because they want to fly and have limited time to play. If it means flying or not, with everyones busy schedules, E is becoming a necessity for a lot of us. I also think in other countries with super expensive glow fuel, they also may have to make the move to E.

Flybarless machines will increase E flight times as well. Probably increase Glow flight times too, but not sure about that.

Wow. I guess I'm a little spoiled because of my location. I've got a lot of open areas far enough away from ears and civilization if needed. I'm guessing these restrictions, in certain areas, are for noise abatement. What a bummer deal there. I can see that would sway some into electric, so they can enjoy the hobby within their time restraints and restrictions.

Thumbs up

definately, and expecially if they made HV an option. You could probably build an A123 pack for under $300 for his bird.... how sweet would that be?

No way. Bad enough toasting ONE $300 pack at a time. Wallet couldn't handle TWO going down. Besides that, it's turning out lipo life spans aren't so great even when they don't get splattered. I've always been pro E, but IMHO anything bigger than a 50 needs to be a smoker.
