I bought insurance for my 180 QX @ $3
Behind my back yard there is a big city park with tall trees and needles to say about the constant wind. I have read in the past that MQxs and 180s are eaten by big and thick trees and lost within the branches. I have a bike flashing LED (3 grams including the battery) which can be attached to anything. I said to myself why not to the 180? The battery lasts around 100 hours and the unit is waterproof. The light is really bright. Now if in the unlikely event my 180 is eaten by a tree I will be able to see where it is and try to recover it. This is my $3 insurance. I know a lot of folks have installed the RAM LEDs but this solution costs around $15 and power is drawn by the main battery which does not last so long.

That's pretty neat. Where did you buy it? I want one.
I lost my RC Logger Eye One Xtreme in the desert last weekend and sure something like this would have helped me find it. I even went looking at night with a lantern hoping to see a reflection off the shiny bits I added but had no luck. --Elisabeth

That's an excellent idea as far as being able to help spot your lost quad. But in defense of the RAM lights, I use those to assist me in keeping the craft oriented (so hopefully it doesn't end up in that tree in the first place) - something which really can't be done with just a single flashing red light. I would not be able to successfully fly at night or even low light conditions without them. And I notice no significant shortage of flight times with them on....can't compete with that $3 price tag though!

I agree about the RAM lights orientation. I had them installed on my MQx. But attaching the clip light at the back of the canopy provides some how an orientation. Keep in mind there are two light choices, steady lor flashing light. Flying at night since this LED is made to be seen from very far away (safety light for a biker) makes it very easy to tell where the tail of the aircraft is.

Good deal....If my RAMs ever blow out I may try one of those just to see how it works out for me. What have I got to lose besides 3 bucks?
(but there's just something so re-assuring about seeing those 2 bright white LEDs shining at me when I'm turning it for home!) |
