i worry about my esc overheating so i wanted to get a bec.

You would be wise to get one. I have one on my Trex 550 with my Mini Vbar. I am running the CC PRO BEC. Its about $38 bucks and its worth it. My stock ESC doesn't get hot at all.

The way I understand it the BEC only effects voltage and current going to the servo's and gyro. So, getting an external BEC will not help an overheating ESC due to increased current draw from a motor with bigger blades.

For that I think you just need a better ESC, one that can handle higher amp draw.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...not strong on electronics here.

I believe you are correct, but I was merely stating that the stock ESC with the 550mm blades is fine and it won't overheat. I fly 3D and put some decent stress on the ESC and it stays warm, but never gets hot. I would recommend running a separate BEC though, just in case the internal BEC in the ESC failed.

A linear. BEC converts excess voltage to heat. A standalone BEC will make ESC run cooler.I use Western Robotic Mini 10 amp contact 16 peak. Nice and light, though expensive.

I would use a stand alone BEC also-I have been running the WR Hercules (four in service) and the Mini Hercules (1 in service) and am very impressed, so far.
