Should i pin the tail boom to the frame?
I watched Finless Bob's trex 450 pro videos and in a tail assemble video he showed that when the tail boom is mounted to the frame and even when the screws are tightened the tail boom can still come out. He pulled it and showed it.
Is it really necessary to do this? And when drilling a hole will i bend the tail boom and damage it? |

Yes, you should do it.
It represents about five minutes of work compared to the time and expense of a potentially ugly crash. As you are drilling through the plastic tail boom mount and the aluminum boom, you will not be bending the boom. I did it on both my Trex 450 Pro and EXI 450 Pro.

It is not necessary, I have over 120 flights without a pinned boom and it has been fine. If you want to pin the boom that is perfectly fine.

Im doing a t 450 build and i can see the posibility of it comming loose. It took only 2 min and most of my time was spent looking for the tools required LOL.
Also the build/kit come with a extra screw just like Finless video points out. THANKS Finless for your Videos |

Definitely Pin the Boom
Best method. I installed the boom into the boom block, making sure that the torque tube was not bottomed out in either gear, and then used a pin vice to drill a pilot hole through both the boom block and the boom. Then I just inserted a screw slightly larger than the pilot hole. Long enough to go through the boom block and boom but not long enough to make contact with the torque tube.

johnsma22,
That is exactly how I did it. A few minutes of work to prevent a possible catastrophic failure makes complete sense. You did a very neat job, by the way.

Thanks! Definitely cheap insurance. I saw Finless bob do this in the 450 Pro build videos on day one of my build. I can see the belt guys not wanting to do this because they need to be able to move the boom to adjust belt tension, but it seemed like a no-brainer for a torque tube setup.

Even in the Finless vid I believe I remember him saying that he has had a 500 and 600 boom ejected but secured the 450 just in case (If I am wrong feel free to correct me, it has been awhile since I watched the video). I know that once I seat the tail supports, there is no way that boom is coming out, I could probably do more damagetrying to yank it out before I ever succeeded!
I am not against insurance, but the boom support seems like more than enough for the 450.

I find a wrap or 2 of tape around the boom does the job.

Only thing I will add... is why does the new boom blocks on the 600 ESP since 2009 come with a hole in the tail end portion to pin the boom? Align added it now. Hmmmmm......

Just PIN it!
It's just too quick, cheap, and easy not to.

I pinned it to the frame with a screw to be safe. I dont want to risk my first build. Thanks Finless for that advice. Your videos are helping me a lot.
Anyway i was wondering, Finless said that align is using a pin to pin the boom to the frame after 2009. Then why haven't they changed the Trex 450 pro design to include a pinning mechanism? |

Finless is careful, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, I would guess that the mass of the 600+ boom is significantly higher than that of the 450. Now take that mass and start spinning it and you can see where the problem is with the Align boom mount. I would never be so bold as to suggest it is impossible for the 450 boom to go flying out, simply that I'm not convinced that the risk is great enough to lose sleep over, doubly so because my 450 tends to kill itself before I get to do anything crazy with it

For the very few minutes it takes to do this, it does not make sense, to me, not to do it.
