Damaged in crash, stock or aluminum replacements ?
I was out at the park today flying my new mCPx outside for the first time. 15 batteries in things were going great ... until.
Some idiot had their dog off the leash and it went charging for the helicopter. I panicked and lost orientation and it smacked into the only small piece of concreate around. Upon inspection I see that one of the balls on the swash plate broke off. Should I replace it with a stock one or upgrade to one of the aluminum ones. The main reason I ask is what will happen in a simular crash with aluminum. Will it do damage to the servos instead ? I am still very new to CP and know another crash is bound to happen. |

Your going to get a million different opinions. I say to replace the swash with an aluminum one. It's the only upgrade I've made to mine. Do the grommet mod to it and enjoy flying. I went with microheli and I'm quite happy with the way it fly's.

+1, The swash is probably the best upgrade that u can do to a brushed bird besides for better batteries.

What do you mean by grommet mod ? Is this required for the aluminum upgrade ? Where can I find more information on it, search isn't giving me any clear results

He means put canopy grommets on the swash balls behind the servo links to take out some of the extra slop. The heli will respond better (more precisely) to cyclic inputs.

If you have a version 2 mcpx it will already have the grommets on the stock swash. They are the little rubber pieces on the swash balls. Transfer those over to a micro heli or rakon aluminum swash. They keep the links tight on the balls and help reduce play. That's a good upgrade IMHO. I have microheli swashes on both my mcpx's. One of them is pushing a year old with a bazilion flight and half a bazilion crashes.

Placing my order now Seems like a lot of people tend to have 2 of them. What is the reasoning behind it ? In the event you break one ?

save your old swash. When you get your MH swash, swap out the MH ball for the stock ball as it is smoother. I went to the extent to put auto bearing grease on the delrin prior to installing the ball so it will be smooth and won't wear out as fast.

+1 for mh swash, although I did manage to bend an arm on one(inverted landing on road).
They are much more durable than stock and also perform better. I have tried MH and Xtreme and have a RKH here to try, do not get an Xtreme. |

For me, the reason I have 2 is as I try new stuff and upgrade parts I have amassed enough spare parts to build build a second one. I thought this was going to be a good idea at first but it turns out that I know have twice as much repair work to do. Lol.

I just broke my swash so I'm thinking of a aluminium swash.
My frame is also worse for wear...are any of the after market frames actually more crash proof? I honestly done care at all about performance; it's solely reliability and strength without weighing the bird down. I'm picking up the Air Time skids too. With the solid CF boom and the above, I'm thinking I might end up with a pretty solid little heli. Has anyone gone this route; soley crash proofing the MCPX and not worrying at all about bling? My canopy is covered with tape as it makes it stronger and it covers the carnage underneith...I just want longevity in my MCPX's. |

No one makes anything crash proof. You will waste as much if not more money trying to do this than had you just replaced what you break. The energy of a crash has to go somewhere, if it's not the thing you replaced with a stronger version it will be the next thing in the chain. Adding heavier "upgrades" makes the issue worse as you add more mass to f=ma. If you crash it is likely things will break period.

As an addition, I went with a solid titanium shaft as well. Guess my wallet wasnt light enough... Don't know if its just me, but it seemed to fly even smoother, The rest of the body have left essentially stock. But, if i keep popping frame pins, may go with an upgraded frame as well. These things remind me of buying a Harley Davidson. They build it just enough so you have to spend more $ on it to get it where you want it. I figured this one out early and bought my last three helis off of ebay with most of what I wanted already on them, like I did with my Road King when I bought it used with all the add ons I wanted already done. |

If you only broke one of your balls, rotate the inner part of the swash ( the piece with the balls) 90 degrees and put the links back on. It will keep you in the air until the new swash arrives.
