Well, I got out and tested the 120. Looks like it might've been nothing more than the solder joints or maybe the current limiting. I ended up nearly stripping out the tail gear in flight so I'm either going to ditch the governor or get a smaller pinion. Headspeeds sound pretty high and my motor comes down really hot.

how hot was it could you hold your finger on it for a few seconds if so there is nothing wrong those kinds of temps are normal. especially seeing as you are from arizona and your ambient temps are really high. how do you know you almost blew the tail gears out? was it a partial strip or what happened?

Partial strip. I had a couple feathered teeth with one really bad flake coming off one of them. I've owned a few TT helis, so I'm not unfamiliar with the occurance. I was just surprised to see it for the first time in person (not that I should have been with the white gears and reported problems associated with them). I'll likely switch to black gears or go back to fixed endpoints because it was doing extremely well without the governor on there. Can't say I've ever fancied them anyways. Doh!!! Yeah, that was a pretty dumb statement, wasn't it? Probably should've said 3-4 by now (including the tree I clocked the other day). It still flies, so it's hangin in there so far.

i can only hold my fingers on the scorpion for a few seconds it is a lot warmer than a nitro this is completely normal. you will know if its too hot electric motors are speced to run up to 200c which will litterally sizzle flesh off upon touching it. what is your govenor gain set at? the scoprions really dont like above 15 and that could cause your tail stripping problem. also what version of the ice firmware are you running 4.0 had some problems so make sure you update to 4.0.1

I have the cc120 in my fusion (6 cells only) and the 4020-1390 Scorpion motor just gets warm only.
I put in a yge90HV in it last weekend... I set the timings, pwm etc the same as the CC120 and the motor is MUCH hotter and not nearly as much power. I put back in the cc120 and its much better again.. tons of power and warm motor only. So I too wonder.. In my case maybe the YGE HV series is more efficient with a 12S setup versus a 6 ? I dont know what to make of it ..

Well, I gunned it today (mind you I updated to V4.01 due to the advisory from CC) and the worst temps were around 140* after the flight. Haven't checked the logs yet, but I'm guessing they'll be a lot lower than the 167 to 178 I saw on the last trip out.

I have a HV 85 in my Fusion with a Scorpion 4035 HK III 560 on 12 S with 12deg pitch & 2180 gov rpm, I only fly sport style but offten get full pitch/power during some of the bigger moves & high speed runs. I used to check the motor & ESC temps on the days the outside air temp was 38-40 deg c, the ESC was only ever 20-25 dec c higher than the air temp & the motor after 6min stay about 65deg c regardless of air temp, straight after landing, give it 2-3 min later after shut down & it increase to 75?
More than 300 flights, I had a ICE 80 & 120 bothe went up in smoke on the first spool ups, the HV has not missed a beat (touch wood) |

That's good to know. My 120 is doing ok so far and I relaly like the data logging, so I'll probably leave it on there for a while. Afterall, I still have the HV85 as a back-up. Haven't had a chance to get on it and double-check my current limiting. I have a pretty good feeling now that that's what was causing a lot of the slow-downs at full pitch. Then again, the headspeeds are much higher using the 120HV, so either the solder joints had a hand in it or I really had something else set wrong on the controller.
