Default stainless screws?

so are stainless steel screws strong enough for r/c helis?...

shopping around for some replacement screws and was wondering if SS screws would be strong enough..or are they to brittle?

They are plenty strong enough for aluminum or plastic. I use them for the frame bolts only. I got tired of having frame bolts getting rusty. Add some anodized aluminum washers (your choice of color) for a nice look.

There is a sale going on at fast lad on rc screwz kits, I am wondering the same thing, will buy it (half price!) and report back. I have had two screws break on me from overtightening. Will be buying the bulk package with 450 screws for small helis.

I get mine from Fastenal (the screw kits never have all the ones you need) as they are local for me. There will be those that say that these: http://www.helidirect.com/helicopter...cs-in-red.html are bling. I disagree. They serve a purpose and as a bonus they look nice.

I get them in bulk....as I don't want to use button head screws if I don't have to so the "sets" won't work for me...and I like to have extras

I get them from this guy....but he is moving is place and isn't shipping or taking orders again until March...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/361060703658...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

but I have used this guy as well

And I agree ...washers , no matter what the color, creates more surface area to spread holding load

My experience is that stainless steel is more likely to fracture and leave a piece embedded in a part compared to a standard screw which a few have bent.

Also for those gorilla arms out there I have snapped stainless screws off with relatively little force.....

Just a word of caution.

I've put my Logo 800 in twice and the 480 once (and other as well). All of them have had SS screws on the frame sides. Never had an issue with a fracture. I've never stripped one either. My guess is quality of screw. I know my first ones were from a kit and looked cheap. The ones from Fastenal are quality fasteners and the only ones I trust on my models.

I wouldn't use SS screws for critical loads, like the feathering shaft, etc. For frame sides, sure, if you want stainless.

McMaster-Carr also sells stainless SHCS and BHCS.

Lube all stainless bolts/nuts. Stainless is real bad for pressure galling. Which will weld the bolt threads basically when you try to remove. Now of corse, we don't lube our threads in a heli. Use Locktite. it will act as a barrier to thread galling as well as holding. Even of the faster in question doesnt need locktite, use it on stainless. I used to use stainless exclusively in my RC cars. And I work with them quite frequently at work. Having them gall the threads is a part wrecker

Loctite works on stainless, but only about 25% of the holding power (compared to steel).
