4525 clicking noise
My 4525LE on my Goblin has started to make strange "clicking" noises. The noise comes whenever the motor rotates but only after it has run for a while.
The noise appears in flight and the following video was shot just after landing. I'm spinning the motor by turning the blades by hand. If I wait till the motor has cooled down the sound will not appear [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVdaPDB-FOE[/ame] I have had some troubles earlier with this motor/esc combo as I have posted about before in this thread https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=395319 The fluctuating rpm problem went away for a few flights but it's back now. I'm running the ESCs internal gov. I have tried adjusting the I and P gains and recallibrated the throttle. Nothing helps and Im beginning to think its a defect somewhere in the motor or esc. Any similar experiences or suggestions? Thx

Thanks for the input, but dont want to void the warranty.
Never taken a motor apart before so will probably just send it back to Scorpion as its only a few weeks old.

2 ideas:
first: often seen and heard - some magnetic dirt (small piece of iron) came into the airgap. second: a magnet became loose. I didn't think, you will loose the warranty by open the motor! you only have to remove the circlip for this. it's imo a normal step of inspection you should do time by time. more about these things: www.powerditto.de/wartung.html pls. use google translation! |

Great suggestions and thx for the input.
I took the motor off the heli and before I even got further I noticed it had mechanical binding The magnets touch the stators at certain points Sending it back to Scorpion and hope they can fix it

So, as it turns out the motor had binding but it was actually not the cause of the sound. I put another motor in and the sound still appears after a few minutes flight. Just to be sure right after I landed i disconnected the motor-pinion and turned the blades, and there was the sound again.
I took the drive-train apart but dont see anything unusual. Im guessing its a problem with the one-way bearing

Just a question, did you SEE the magnet touching the stator, or did you feel it?
Shorting the bullets make it feel like it, might be that it was what you did? |

It was apparent from both visual and from feeling. The binding was also there when the motor was completely pulled off and not connected to anything. I could see the magnets touch the stators

Hi George,
so as far as I understand the source of your clicking sound was from the bearing in the motor? I have just taken the whole drivetrain in the Goblin apart and put a new OWB in. When I get my ESC back (its in for repairs at Scorpion) I will test to see if the sound has disappeared.

Thanks for the clarification...The confusion arose because I had the Goblin in mind (which has no motor support bearings in the frame) but I see now it was in reference to your 700, with big bold capital letters.
The search for the culprit continues
