Default Is this any good?

Hey guys, long time since I last posted on here. I hope everyone's ok!

I saw my helicopters for the first time a couple of weeks ago which I hadn't seen for about 9 months. I forgot how cool they are!

Anyway, I'm posting now because my neighbour just came around and wanted to see if this was worth him buying http://www.nitrotek.co.uk/4ch-cessna...rtf-2-4gh.html

It looks ok to me, the electronics are probably bad, but for his first plane, I think it should do the job, don't you think?

I'd appreciate your input, and if you know of any better deals out there, please let me know

I'm gunna have to leave it there now because this laptop is about to run out

Cheers

Jonny

That looks to be a decent starter plane. It'll get him in the air and used to the controls before moving up to a better model.

Eflite also has some starter planes available. I would probably choose the Eflite myself, but the pricing will be a little higher. The Super Cub seems to be a good choice for beginner pilots. There are also different sizes available, and the newer models all run on DSMX, which would be handy for its versatility. He could buy a dx6i used, and use it for his planes and whatever else he decides to get into. Lots of things are running DSMX nowadays, including planes, helicopters, etc. Anything Eflite will likely run with it.

Hey Jonny!!!

Been wondering how you been? Worried you forgot about all your dear ol' friends here! Funny how life just gets in the way.

So, tell us what you have been up to all this time?

Good to hear from you, again.

It would do the job, no problems. The only real downer is the NiMh battery....he won't be taking that on to another model...lol.

If he can get his hands on a DX6i, then I would recommend the ST Models Cessna as an alternative. I've taught a few newbies on that and it is real beauty.

As another option, the ST Models MX2 is bizarrely a good plane to learn on....yep, really. Although it is fully aerobatic (they say 3D...but not really), it can be tamed down to be an ultra stable beast. Again, I have taught complete newbies on this....one of them has now only made 9 flights and is ready to try his first landing tonight....he already takes off and does his own circuits. You turn the throws down on the Tx and she's a docile little thing.

No no, Tom, I haven't forgotten about you lot We had an extension on our house which took a lot longer than we all expected. We weren't living in it while it was being extended, but most of my stuff was still over here sealed up in one room. I have been checking in, still, and you should start seeing more of me again now that I'm back home and back into the hobby

Anyways, I'm fine by the way I've appled for University this year but it was a bit late notice so I still don't know if I'm in or not. I do know that there are still spaces left on the course, so I'm hoping that I do get in. I'll be doing 3D computer animation because that's always interested me, and I enjoy doing it too. If they had a full time course on flying rc helicopters, I'd be doing that

As for the rc plane. I've mentioned the DX6I to my neighbour many times and he doesn't sound interested to be honest. He's not that serious about this hobby so I don't think the cost and tweaking involved with one appeals to him. I know the dx6i costs practically nothing if you're really serious about this hobby but £60 for a second hand transmitter is a lot to him. Especially when compared to a brand new rtr 38" wingspan plane for £95

Anyway, cheers for the input. I'll tell him that it should be a good starter plane for him. He can't really go wrong at £95.

Luke, good point on the battery. Would it be possible to solder on some deans to use a lipo instead? He has some 3s 2200mah lipos already, but I'm guessing they'll be too much for that setup?

Cheers

Jonny

Hey Jonny,

It's damn good to hear from you again Was wondering why the renovations were taking so long, but glad to hear your home again

I know nothing about planks, so will abstain from that debate!

We usually advice a Multiplex Funcub for beginners. Easy to build, fly and land, the large wheels have a big advantage on rough surfaces, easy to repair, and it can grow with you to some extent. Most even get their flying license with such a plane. A few members have mounted a more powerful motor, and are still having some fun with it. Crashes well, and parts are easy to find (down here at least). Just an idea.

You need your own electronics and TX of course, but that helps a lot after your first crash, at least you know what's in there, how to assemble it in, and where to get it. This RTF stuff can be hard to get the servo's out and such. But one might need a little help getting it ready for the first flight. After that, the sky is the limit though.

Good to hear from you too Denis It's nice to see most of the gang still here actually

Well I don't think my neighbour ended up buying that plane, otherwise I would have probably heard about it by now.

Raf, that plane does look like a really good starter, I'll tell him about that one.

DS, that plane looks nice! I'm a fan of biplanes. I might have to get one of those for myself. I think it might be a bit too much for my neighbour though. I could still mention it to him though. The price seems good!

Cheers

Jonny
