IS there a difference?
I was talking to an "expert" about LiPo batteries the other day. We started talking about 3S packs and 3S2P packs. He made a comment about a 3S1P pack and I said just drop the "1P" part of the name because it is redundant. He said that a 3S and a 3S1P are different. I think he's wrong - they are the same. Which one of us is right?

In a way, you're both right. 3S refers to the number of cells in series. A 3S1P and a 3S2P are both technically 3S packs. However, in common usage, the term 3S typically refers to 3S1P.
Or, to put it another way, all 3SnP packs are 3S packs but not all 3S packs are 3SnP packs (where n is the number of cells in parallel).
