People like this get the big eye's looking at us...(Birmingham)
Reading For News this morning I saw an article about a "drone" causing a scare at KBHM.
http://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/...abama-airport/ I looked for his youtube page and found it under his name, Michael Mayhew, https://www.youtube.com/user/mmayhew Just about every one of his videos makes me furious. This is the reason big brother has a spotlight on us. I wonder how long he has rc'd, how much exp if any he has outside of his ready to fly Vision. I wonder if he even realizes how much danger he put aircraft in. Sadly the american public will only see "Drone" and "Airport"...thus increasing the ban initiative that is already starting to roll. I realize that most folks here on helifreak are not FPV'rs or multi guys...but not only will this have implications to normal LOS rc but if you ever get the FPV bug, like I did. It could mean that you may not be able to legally fly FPV in a safe, well planned and executed manner. Also..sorry if this is a double post, did not see anything on it as of yet. Looked him up on Facebook and sent this message,
"I am a RC junkie per say. Been flying for only a couple years at this point but have been bit by the FPV bug. After reading the news article this morning regarding a flight that you made in the BHM area recently, and viewing some of your other videos, I really hope this has enlightened you on the plight of FPV in the US...and of how actions such as yours harm our goal. I am not sure how much experience you have in RC, or if the Vision is your first RC craft. Either way I would suggest that you take a trip to the AMA website along with other enthusiast websites, Helifreak.com, RCGroups, com and so forth, to get an idea of the battle we are in and how actions like yours harm our cause. Do not take this as an attack, as it is not. I am hoping that you can use this opportunity to further your knowledge of RC and maybe even put it to good use. It also might be a good idea to take some of your videos down, beyond LOS, alt above 400 ft AGL until this blows over...or make them private at least. A Concerned RC'er." I am sure it will fall of deaf ears, but maybe he will learn something from all of this. |

I don't care for quad drones. Seems more like a robot than something you fly. Doesn't seem like they can go inverted for very long either.

They are just getting variable pitch versions out now....most are just fixed pitch, so they can flip, but not stay inverted.. I think Curtiss Youngblood is on the fore-front of full out variable pitch multi-rotors...

I really do miss my 450 heli. After it was stole I replaced it with a Flame Wheel F550. It is a lot of fun to mess around with but it does not replace blade farts.
Saying that I really hope fools like this don't get the FPV side of the house officially grounded. If he responds ill be sure to post! |

I'm normally not a proponent whatsoever of quads/multi-rotors, but the Invertex will fly unlimited upside down and is fixed pitch. It just spins the blades backwards when it flips upside-down. It'll do rainbows and "tic-tocs", but they're nowhere near the response times of a variable pitch rotor disc. It's fun to fly at least. I guess they're only around $400 or so and run on 2200 45C+ packs. Anyways, just figured I would fill the guy in who mentioned that they only do flips.
On topic though, the only problem I'd have with most of this would be if they decided to start regulating my regular R/C helis. It's a slippery slope, and as we've seen from most any ogoverning body, they'll always be pushing to grab power and deny everyone the right to do anything (including breathing!) if they can get away with it. That's not to sound disestablishmentarianist, but really you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere and that guy is simply kicking dirt on the line and we get less room on our side when it gets redrawn.

I had to laugh at this part. I like it. And it defines itself. Good comments and I agree.

No offence but this is part of the problem. Vague messages. "Its ok if no-one sees it". The message should be very clear from all involved. Its not ok, you put our hobby at risk and more importantly you put life and property at risk. If I find out who you are I will report you.

What an idiot! Did you see his videos where he almost hit his little girls a few times?! Wow. I guarantee he's using all kinds of auto pilots too.
I left a message on that video.

I'll reply to wxdude's Facebook message here since there seems to be an audience for it. I'll also be happy to answer any serious questions. Flaming, derogatory comments are welcomed as well but won't be responded to.

To answer a few other questions, yes, I do have quite a bit of RC experience. Not nearly as much as most of you guys but I have been flying RC helis for as long as I can remember. My Uncle got me into the hobby in the early 90s. While my Phantom 2 (not Vision) was bought RTF, it's not completely stock. I fly with a Futaba 14SG radio, ImmersionRC 600mW Video Tx, Flytrex Core 2, mini-iOSD and ImmersionRC Patch/SpiroNet antennas on a Flysight Black Pearl diversity Rx. I also have a pair of FatShark Predator v2 goggles. Not that any of this matters to the point at hand. Quote:
I disagree that I almost hit the kids. You can definitely say I put them in unnecessary danger by shooting this video but that could be said about a lot of activities. I personally think the risk was low but you are very welcome to your opinion. Thanks for sharing it so passionately. And no, I'm not using "all kinds of auto pilots". DJI does offer an add-on to allow autonomous-flight but I don't see the cost benefit. |
