Talking Calibrating throttle path on Kontronik ESCs to your Transmitter

Since there is no documentation from Kontronik on this here we go..

Throttle span calibration for the Kontronik Jazz and Jive ESCs
This only apply if you have NOT used the ProgCard I to program the endpoints of your radio.

First note that this is done after you have done your mode 1 and mode 4 for heli governor. This does not need to be done immediately after only sometime after you have done the programming with your normal curve being 0-100% for programming purposes.

First make sure your throttle curve in the radio is a linear 0-100 curve.
Now as you know and are aware the ESC will not arm until it sees 0% throttle. With your esc “unplugged” goto your menu in you transmitter and make your throttle “endpoints” 50 top/50 bottom (ATV).

Turn on your transmitter, now put the throttle stick to full bottom; this is with 50%top and bottom as mentioned in your throttle endpoints. Plug in your esc, it will not arm. Keep your transmitter throttle stick at full bottom, do not touch it.

Now move your bottom throttle endpoint % downward, increasing that number towards 100 (SLOWLY, it will take a sec after you reach the max until it arms, so don’t go too fast). As you get closer to 75% start doing it point by point in %, when the esc arms, simply go a few past that as “insurance room”. Say you now have a value for example of 83%, this % to note will now be your top % as well, do not program or touch this though at this point.

Unplug your esc, now program in the found % that you see on bottom that armed the esc into the top% value of your throttle endpoint. You now have calibrated your ESC to the throttle path of your specific transmitter.

Note: on all Spektrum radios this value will be 83/83 default

What does this mean you ask??

Well on most all ESCs and electrics it is always stated that you should have “headroom” for a proper working governor. This is absolutely true. What ever value you found is actually 100%

For example say for sometime now you been running 80% throttle curve in your idle 2 or stunt 2 as some call it. If your value found was 83% when doing the throttle calibration, you actually have been running 96% of the throttle path and power available from your setup. It is optimum in most cases with any esc that you should be between a value of 75-85% of your esc. Therefore after doing this evaluation what % you are running out of the found throttle % path you can now make a determination as to your gearing. In many cases with the very high and strong output of lipos today a higher % may or may not affect your setup, this is simply to know where you are and to make a more educated decision on your setup, i.e.: pinion size, motor specific etc.

As a final note, this will not increase or decrease performance in your esc or setup, it is strictly to know where you “really are” in regards to true 100% of throttle path. Once you do this, your % in your idle 1 or idle 2 will now in fact be true % of the available esc/throttle path.

I have ran these ESCs for a few years since being in the hobby and was unaware of this fact with the Jazz/Jive escs, thanks to Fredrik aka: Mr. Mel for pointing this out. I simply tested and confirmed this to be true and documented the procedure for all of you. Be well
