Default How well can this be waterproof sealed? (Dragonplate Carbon Fiber Birch Core)

This is a bit off topic but i was researching people who have used the Dragonplate's Carbon Fiber Birch Core and saw that people on this forum have had experience with it on this thread: https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=435050

I'm actually mocking up some parts for a snowboard binding prototype.

Interested in using this Dragonplate Carbon Fiber Birch Core material because it's suppose to be lighter and stronger than even the solid carbon fiber plates they sell. This right here: http://dragonplate.com/ecart/categories.asp?cID=3

Here's a strength/weight test video compared to normal carbon fiber:
Carbon fiber deflection to failure testing (3 min 9 sec)

My only concern is how the exposed wood along the edges will react to constant exposure to snow/water.

Can i fix this issue by just sealing up the exposed wood edges with some sort of sealant? Has anyone here had to try anything like that?

I have no experience with waterproofing wood. Not sure if birch wood needs special attention or not. Not sure if even after you seal it, will there be a chance small amounts of water can still seep through. Not sure if the 'seal' layer actually just creates a barrier or if it actually impregnates the wood itself to make it waterproof. Would it carbon fiber next to it have adverse effects to the sealant?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Impressive stuff. I think the real question has more to do with what kind of adhesive was used to do the CF/wood layup than sealer choice. Marine grade plywood is/was used as boat transoms so it can certainly be sealed and made last for years. However, when I tried to replace a damaged transom with regular plywood painted with cheap paint, it didn't last long. As long as an epoxy or similar non-waterproof glue was used to make the CF/birch sandwich, and you seal the edges with a quality paint, I don't see why this wouldn't work in your application. In my limited experience, sealers that impregnate the wood need to be reapplied and I would not think that would be what you want. Good luck.

Hmm...it just says epoxy on the birch description page.

It could be one of these adhesives on their site: http://dragonplate.com/ecart/categories.asp?cID=133

Is there a general-all-purpose-go-to wood sealant if you don't need anything too fancy? Like the WD-40 of wood sealing?
