Default Introduction - Hatori SB-12R Muffler - Flex mount

Here's the new Hatori gas muffler, its based on their original "flex mount" system. Targeted for zenoah based 26-29cc motors

Hatori SB-12R flex mount gas muffler

If you're familiar with the Hatori flex mount system, its the same setup. The muffler itself rides on high temp o-rings and clamps to the header using silicon dampers. This is the most obvious difference from the current Hatori gas mufflers that direct mount to the cylinder using a steel plate.

if there is a drawback to the original muffler, its that the bolts that hold the steel plate to the cylinder are inside the muffler. So if they get loose you have to disassemble the muffler. With this system, all the bolts are external so they can be tightened easily.

Flex Mount Assembled

here's what comes in the package. No additional mounts are needed as the flex mount system fully supports the muffler

Muffler Package Contents

and here's the dimensions for the muffler. Its basically identical to the existing hatori gas mufflers except that the steel spacer plate is no longer needed so its 5mm closer to motor. All up weight of all of the muffler components is 8.8 oz. Thats about the same weight as some of the lightest mufflers being offered today.

Muffler dimensions

Here you can see the pipe mount with the Viton O-Rings installed and the mount dampers inserted in the header mount

Ready for installation

If' you're familiar with the Hatori flex-mount system, the header is a large cavity where the o-rings on the pipe-mount seat. This is something totally new for gas helicopters!

Header cavity is similar to the glow versions

The pipe mount bolts on using std M5 bolts. This mounts easily on the Whiplash Gas however some models like the Radikal V2 would require a custom spacer due to the way the landing gear/motor frame fits around the engine

Pipe mount installed on TRMVX290TT - Special Edition

Once the header is seated on the pipe mount o-rings, its secured to the mount/engine using M2.5 bolts and special lock nuts

Muffler attached to pipe mount

And here's the muffler mounted on the Whiplash Gas. As noted earlier at 8.8oz, the Hatori went from being the second heaviest pipe available to the second lightest!

Muffler installed on Whiplash Gas

The Bottom Line

The Hatori SAB12-2R is of the highest quality and finish. It offers high performance as well as a pleasant sound. Now its one of the lightest as well!

Very nice.

Be sure to test how long the o-rings last. I can remember using their nitro versions, years ago, and seem to remember that the O-rings did not last very long. As the gasser engines run a lot hotter, I will be curious to see how these o-rings hold out.

One would hope they are high temp versions, or they are likely to melt before you finish the first flight...

Please lt us know if this new muffler can be mounted on Radikal 30??
The old version is imposible to mount on Radikal 30 without using some special spacer. What about this new muffler??

Happy autos!!

With a street price of about $270 for the current version, I'll bet that the new design will be even higher

I didn't like the Nitro version at all. I also found those rubbers would eventually crumble. Also had trouble with nuts stripping and just the entire design was cumbersome. I just never liked it.

Well it's arrived, fitted and briefly tested.
As expected from Hatori, the quality is spot on, nicely finished and well made.

The note is very pleasant, and performance is great.

Need a few more flights to get a good feel for the effect on tuning / power but very happy so far.

Yeah. But Century is leading the expensive mufflers market with this one:
$324.95 http://www.centuryheli.com/products/...073&pageid=210

The prices are really annoying.
