Talking Air Filter

Hey Guys
I take-off and land on dusty roads and in short grass where dirt, and dust particles, plus clutch and lining particles could get sucked into my engine destroying the bearings and piston. So, I did some moding and installed a foam air filter on my OS 50, from day one. Three gallons later and my engine runs great, plus maybe I get longer run times because there is less fuel lost due to carburetor blow-back.

The Tetra work well:

Good enough for a grass field.

The area of the screen seems really small especially if it gets dirty. I read some old threads about these screens and they said the metal mesh would break up and fall into the carburetor if the engine back fired? (hopefully that's fixed now) One other thing, it looks like you would have to pull the engine to clean or inspect the screen/mesh. With my mod, you only have to remove the bottom two radio tray screws, loosen the top two screws and swing it up, to clean, replace or inspect the foam filter. I use a light foam filter oil on my filters to catch any fine dust particles.

I use the Bru-Line carb air screens
Unfortunately, Bru-Line (or Bru Line) does not make them anymore.
They worked great on 30 to 60 size motors
When I found out they were hard to get I bought 4 and saved them on the shelf - just in case.

Sheldon's Hobbies still has the replacement elements, but not the boots that hold them to the carb body.

There is a lot of talk about the O.S.50 Hyper's rear bearing failing, I think it's because small dirt particles enter unairfiltered engines causing the bearings balls to pit and grind away the race. These engines spin as high as 20,000 rpm's, so just a small dust particle could toast your engine.
