Default what full size tail servo is good for ATOM 500 ?

i'm planning on retiring my Futaba 9257 mini tail servo and using a stronger(faster ?) full size servo on my ATOM 500 but do i need to go faster or is more torque enough ?

i'm looking at a DS620 align servo or the DS650...

I have a JR 8900G on mine, but a DS650 should be fine. Other good choices are the Futaba 9256 (assuming your gyro supports it) or 9254.

wow what a fast reply !

tnx, i was indeed more interested in the 650, why ?
torque, speed and a good price !

but then again, i have a 620 here ready for my 6HV that wil come in next week, maybe i can order a 650 for my 6HV and biuld the 620 in my 500 ??

but i will first take a look after those other futaba servo's to, just to compare but i think for that kind of money and those specs it is hard to beat the Align servo's...

I would go large on the tail servos.

I have had a Futaba 9254 and a JR 8900G on mine-the 8900G performs much better.

I've got a 650 on my 6HV and also used on on a 90 electric - good servo - haven't tried the 620 on tail though I would think it would be OK - other option is the MKS BLS980 which is blinding fast and some good prices on it

the new Outrage 9088 would technically be the 'best' you could put on there, but that all depends on your definition of best. MKS makes it as well, so I'm sure you could find similarities in the specs, but the 9088 will have the torque to blow and other servo away (which may account for more to some people).

Damn, what a 'beast' that outrage servo ! But... is'nt that a bit overkill for my Atom 500 ? keep in mind i only do light 3D and alot of FFF...

Probably the same servo made by MKS and rebadged by OUtrage - Turnigy do the same - bear in mind that a lot of these specs need taking with a large pinch of NaCl - when I tested a few their perfromance was less half that claimed - must put the MKS BLS 980 on the torture rack !

I use the JR8900G with my Spartan and it's a flawless combo. That 8900 is a sweet servo. So pretty and red in it's metal case. I think the Torq's look an aweful lot like them. I wonder why???

Ha! you will learn in time there's no such thing!!! In all practicality though, yes it is somewhat overkill because you can't get the full 8.4V out of the BEC (unless you had an external one for running specific servos).

John, you are correct tha MKS makes the Outrage servos (like how Savox makes the servos for Align), but I think they might be slightly different servos. I couldn't tell you for certain but last time I'd dug around, the MKS was showing totally different specs than the Torq servo

but i actually mean is that i'm not a fancy 3D pilot(i do light 3D and FFF), i need a stronger servo that's for sure but do i need a 100+ dollar 'super servo' on that little ATOM ?

In no so many words....yes. You could put a $140 8900G servo on it like mine, or you could get the $80 MKS servo which is faster and has waaaay more torque (plus it doesn't need to be regulated down to 5.2V). You tell me man.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. See what I mean? It's entirely up to you. You can get whatever servo you want, but when it comes down to brass tacks, you want the best you can get. You will everntually grow into how fast the servo moves, but having more torque is almost always good.

There is one other thing to consider, other than specs, and that is track record.

Some of these servos are from new manufacturers, with no established track record. The 8900G, the BLS251, etc. have long established track records.

The newer ones will probably be fine but, for the moment, I will let others establish the track records.

Hyperion DS20-GMD.

$40.00, excellent servo. I use it on a couple of other birds and it's never let me down.

Be careful with this one. There are documented issues with this servo not working well with the Curtis MiniG gyro and I don't know what other gyros may have issues with it.

Hadn't heard that. I run a Spartan and have no issues.

I agree, the Spartan is pretty much the best gyro for compatibility with most every* digital servo out there. While yes, it has had some issues with a very small number of servos, almost all newer digi servos work perfect with it because you can change the pulse width and Hertz to match the servo's needs as well as any other parameters that relate the input/output signals. They post up a pretty good list of both comliant ad known non-compliant servos, so you can put together a list to research before you buy. At worst, give Angelos a PM and he can help you with any selection of servos you have in mind. Their customer service is second to none.
