The Air Filter Thingie

O-key-doke,
Ive got the beast all together and I am looking at the air filter sponge thinking the canopy has to come off to put it on. Thats allright. The canopy will be off and on numerous times for as many reasons, but, I'm wondering how to make the sponge element stick to the snorkle base??? I have read and re-read the instrucitons but, I dont see a mention of how to make it stick and be airtight around the base. I peeled and stuck the little white ring onto the foam but it is only sticky on one side.
How did you guys do it?
I dont want to run the engine without it.

Had the same problem. Ultimately used shoe goo to glue the foam filter to the filter base. Hope that helps.

It should peal on both sides, but you will need to still use something better to hold it most of the time. One of they guys put a small rubberband over it.

I didnt realize that it was peelable on both sides. I cleaned the base of the snorkle with denatured alcohol and it sticks really well. Just because of Murphy though, I put a rubber band as suggested.

I've just been using the double sided tape supplied and my foam element has stayed put through about seven gallons now.

used the black ca glue on mine, had it setting there so thats what I tried. It works too.

On the website, I went into a lot of detail of why to buy the air filter and at the very end show a neat way to do it using a crossing rubber band. The advantage of this is it makes it easy to dribble after run oil down into the carb at the end of the day to lube the bearings so they're less prone to rusting. Here's the link.

I made 2 holes in the base at the outer edge, bent a paper clip into a 3 sided square, stuck the ends through the base, and bent them over on the bottom to hold the element down. that way it comes out at will, but can not come out on it's own. We can ask tintmaster to take a picture, as he has it now.

What sets this crowd apart from the rest is that when faced with a slight setback such as this, everyone is quick to come up with their own solution instead of either complaining about it on the internet or ordering the anodized alumimun "upgrade" to solve their problems. Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions and to JB for the website link. I guess I missed it, but, that is exactly what I ended up doing after reading the helpful comments and finally figuring out that the other side of the double sided tape ring peels off with a good bit of persistance and a sharp no. 11 blade. The rubber band criss-crossed is good insurance.
Yes, it is good to have help rather than arched backs and all that hissing and spitting!!

I also took an awl and poked a hole through the center of the sponge (JB's idea) and then stick a long ca applicator down into the carb to squirt after run oil.
