Castle Creations ESC HV 80 setup help
Alright, I wanted to start a thread about CC ESC's and setups for the 700E (unless someone can point me to one already).
It would be great if you all would post your esc, motor, and any and all setup/settings. I am using the HV 80, a hacker A50-14L 8-pole 540, 12s batts, CCPM perfect regulator, AR7000, stock align servos with the LE kit and the GP780 gyro with 650 servo. I am having a hell of a time setting up my esc. I am using the HV 80 and I set the throttle endpoints in the DX7. I went out today to try to setup the esc for governor mode. I made sure the stick and pitch were 50% and brought the throttle up. I used a tach (which does not seem to be working properly, the app for the iphone) and tached the headspeed. When I setup governor high with medium gain, I set the different %'s in the DX7 for the flight modes and headspeed. The headspeed seemed to low even during the initial tests based on sound but the app was saying otherwise. I hovered the heli numerous times and would have a slow wag. I am using the GP780 with the 650 servo. I also tried using governor low but governor high seemed much better. I messed with the gyro gain settings and could get the tail to wag faster or if I decreased it the tail would not hold. I changed the gain in esc to high and went to spool up. The tail began to shake/wag fast and before I could decrease the headspeed I stripped a main gear. I am using the thicker .7 gear 164 tooth and a 16 tooth pinion. I downloaded the date and it stated the highest headspeed I had was 1800 or so. I have no idea where to begin other than the only gear I have to replace is the stock main gear. I will at least use it for setup/testing. Any help? Gyro gain settings? Esc settings? |

The tail wag is due to the low head speed
the t700 had a poor gear ratio for the tail you should run at 1800 headspeed at least, around 1900 the tail should be really better |

Try this.
1. Make sure that the throttle is calibrated and you have loaded 3.20 firmware on your castle ESC. (hint: look at Finless HV85 setup) 2. Set it to Heli Gov mode: RPM 3. Set your cell count, pinion, main gear, kv and poles, click ok. 4. Gain:Low 15 Others also default. 5. In the three boxes for HS 1800, 1900, 2000 6. Set brake off( should be gray out) 7. Current: Insensitive, Soft cutoff, autolipo detect and 3.0v/cell cutoff 8: Motor; default 9. Beep..off.. Now go to your radio, Set normal throttle curve a 0,50,100 Set Idle 1 at 85, 85, 85 Set Idle 2 at 100,100,100 Assuming that you have entered the correct info as above, and the motor/pinion/batt combo can handle HS 2000.... go fly.. idle 1, you will get 1900 and idle 2 will be a HS of 2000.. . |

Thanks rolexcomex. I will set that up tonight. I do have 3.20 installed.
Quick question: When I set the three rpms in the boxes in castle software, is that the max headspeed for idle up, stunt 1 and stunt 2? How does the throttle curve (or line) work. Is the 85 and 100 setting in the TX 85% of the esc setting in the second box and stunt is 100% at the entered headspeed in the third box? If you need me to clarify let me know. I am trying to figure this esc out. Thanks |

The first box (in rpm mode) is for Tx throttle settings less than 50%, Second box for throttle settings between 51%-99% ( I picked 85% but any number in that range will do), the last box is for throttle input of 100%. So by setting your throttle in the radio for idle1 (stunt1) to 85% across, you should get a HS pretty close to 1900, if you flip it to idle2 (stunt2) at 100% across, you should notice an increase and the esc will try to maintain a HS of 2000.. These are just staring numbers and you can change them according to your flying style.. For example, in my trex500, I use similar settings and idle2 at 100% throttle and the last box is set at 2660 (which is my desired HS..) The ESC tried (and did a good job) of maintaining that HS at around 2600 (red lines) no matter what I was doing.. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zvvqpyin4Ao[/ame] |

Rolexcomex,
Thanks for the help. I had two good easy flights. Here is the log data. What is the peak amp rating on the 80HV? |

looks like the headspeed is right around 1950 which is nice.
But I did not expect the amps to be that high at all. That looks more 6s??.. what are your volts and watts look like?? at minimal voltage of 12s (44.4v) it would indicate that you are putting out between 5300-5800watts which is an incredible amount of power for a 700.... My scorpion 400kv puts out 85-89 amps max and 3800-4000 watts at a HS of 2050 and it has more than enough power to do any demanding 3D moves.. My batt and esc come down barely over ambient temp.. most castle esc are under rated so they can take a significant amount of abuse as long as there is adequate airflow. |

I forget the volts but it was for sure over 40. I think average was 44 or so. I have to pull it up on my windows side of my mac. Peak watts was just shy of 6200, 8.3 horsepower. I know some others have had higher but dang, I didn't think I would get that much. My motor was cool to touch in about 70 degree or so ambient here. Batteries were barely warm but of course I am no 3d king. |
