Picked up a very gently used (if ever flown at all) 600 CF with metal grips. It has been sitting around for some time. I went to spin up the gear train by hand and felt the main gear was bound. Checked and there is backlash between the pinon and main gear. Dropped the motor out. Turning the pinon by hand is real hard but it does not feel notchy. If you force it and overcome the resistance it will free a bit but does come to an abrupt stop. Can spin up the rest of the heli gear train with no effort so it is tight inside the motor. My question, can the motor be readily opened up and the bearings checked/replaced easily? The set up once serviced and running will be going into a scale hughes 500 on a 6s set up.

The chances are that you may be wanting a slower motor for a scale heli (assuming you want a slower headspeed). It is not a great idea to throttle too much using the ESC.

yea, if you're going to slow down the HS, do it with gearing.
Some motors are just harder to turn than others. A test to see if it is binding is to see if you can spin it free with your hands. Hold the can and spin the shaft (pinion on helps) spin it like you would a top on a desk. If the shaft spins a little then quickly slows down you're probably ok. Yes, that motor can be taken apart http://www.helifreak.com/showthread....highlight=open as cheap as that motor is I wouldn't bother. There are many motors that can be had that are far better, such as the newer Align 600MX.

Thanks
Yeah you are righ, may be better to just run it until the magic smoke escapes, then just replace it. I will look at changing the gearing for the scale set up, but first I'll run it up as a pod and boom until I am comfortable the motor is good. Thanks for the help guys Cheers Al |
