RC Noob - Help with my 450 after a crash
*** Just realised this is in the wrong thread - am going to repost in the Blade 450 thread - sorry ***
Hello All, I am a complete noob and ended up with a 450. Needless to say I have crashed it a number of times, the last one being the most spectacular. Ended up needing to replace main blades, tail rotor blades, boom, tail rotor casing and main drive gear (teeth missing). Now I've painstainkingly rebuilt it, beleive I have everything balanced correctly and done the mechanical setup as per the DVD...but.... If I spin it up on a smooth surface it's fine till about 25% throttle. After which it tries to spin right. So I correct the right spin with some left trim (a lot of left trim) after which is stops spinning. A little more throttle and it spins the other way, violently! No matter how I adjust the trim it spins one way or the other. I am completely lost, and have also tried replacing the belt, tail drive gear, bearing shaft. I've also tried it with the Gyro disconnected (plucking a straws). Please help, has been three weeks since the crash and I cannot use it anymore Thanks in advance, Ellis Last edited by EllisD; 08-17-2011 at 10:59 AM.. |

you have done the mechanical setup and the tail behaves the way he says on video?
the tail blades are spinning? do you have another gyro to try?

Before you even try to fly that thing again, go buy yourself a MSR.
Seriously. If you're that new at things, you will just get frustrated and quit the hobby. I crashed my first MSR literally hundreds of times and probably spent a total of $25 on repairs. Don't even think of trying to learn to fly a helicopter on a 450 unless you are INCREDIBLY patient and willing to follow a curriculum like RADD's, which will have you skidding around on training gear for the first 20 batteries. (I'm not knocking it, but it is dull compared to whipping around with a MSR) Don

No MSR,
MSR will teach you bad habits. for trainer get a mcpx.it is a real CP heli. It will be tough but after a month(everyday at least 1 flight) on mcpx you will surprise yourself. Learn to use throttle HOLD before you crash. Fly over grass. 1st hover up about 3 feet tail in and stay within 4 feet square.Do this for 4 weeks. go outdoors and try same with tail out. by this time you should be able to fly mcpx around the sky. now you are ready for 450. good luck.

I started on a B450 and i loved it. Yes, i crashed on my first flight, but i'm up to about 40 flights on it now, and only crashed a total of 3 times.
Granted, i can't do 3d yet, but i can run circuits, do pirouettes, fly nose in a little and fly it very far from me without problems. I can also fly it in 20mph wind gusts. I ain't no super fast learner. I just took the time and didn't rush. My 3 crashes were from me being too adventurous. If you're patient, i'd say learn to love it and take your time. |

The thing about the MSR, or MCPx (I like that idea better), is that you can fly carefree. Its satisfying to fly the 450s, but imagine being able to just try stuff without worry. And have a lot more fun than you would on a sim.
When I started flying in November the MCPx didn't exist. The MSR was how I learned. Its a fantastic little heli. But ROR's advice is true. Just today, I crashed my 450 and instinctively pulled the left stick back rather than hit the throttle hold. Because of that I wrecked a main gear. I still don't have a MCPx, but its next on my list. Does a TRex canopy fit a Blade?
I crashed today and trashed my B450s canopy.
I see all kinds of interesting TRex canopies for not a lot of money. Will they fit? I don't mind redrilling holes in different places. Don

Firstly, thanks for your replys. Even though most of them were along line the lines of "get rid of it and buy a different one". I'm stubborn, like a challenge and have a bit of money to burn so have no problems crashing, learning slowly and dragging it around the floor on training gear for months :-)
In answer to your questions : yes the tail blades do spin, and yes they move in the same direction as the video. I think I have solved the problem but the solution does not make sense and probably leaves the gyro doing the wrong thing. In sheer desperation I tried switching the gyro switch to reverse. Doing this makes the tail blades move in the incorrect direction when manually turning the tail (i.e. looking behind the bird, turning the tail to the right causes the tail to move as if I had given a left input - contrary to the video). So my question is why has this fixed the spinning (pirouetting??) ???? Thanks all, Ellis |

Which way does the nose move? The rudder turns the helicopter's nose right or left. When you are in a tail in hover ( tail pointing towards you) and move the rudder stick to the right, the nose should move to the right and the tail then is moving to the left (the whole helicopter rotates clockwise). I am also new to flying helicopters, I have an MCPX but it is so much easyer to fly than the B450 and it doesnt get broken in most crashes, I just hit the TH and it flops into the grass. Usually I just have to press the main gear untill it is tight and fly again. So most of my flying is done with the MCPX, it litteraly wants to keep flying. I have crashed one of my B450's twice now, I ended up buying two so that I will always have one avilable to fly. I use the rebuilt one to try new things like actually flying in a circle. I think that because of the MCPX and simmulator I feel like I should be able to fly the B450, but I now realize that the B450 is much more advanced than my limited skills. I am taking it easy with the B450 now and slowing the pace. I know that it takes time to develop the skills necessary in order to safely fly the B450 and so I am putting in the time hovering at different angles untill I really feel comfortable with it. I know that in the long run I will enjoy the hobby more if I take my time and dont rush it. Good luck, I hope you get it figured out because it is so much fun!

I am curious about this too.. I just ordered a Trex canopy from Hobbyking.com. I guess we'll know soon enough.

Is your belt turning the tail rotor the right direction? The reason I ask is because I just got my 450 back together this evening and got the belt twisted the wrong direction(turning tail rotor backwards) when I put the new tail boom on. Pretty easy to do if you take it apart one day and reassemble it the next. When I spun it up for a test flight it looked perfect-until I gave it a little rudder and that's when the fun started! 10 mins. later I had it fixed and back in the air-no damage.

Thinking about it, it's obvious, but it just didn't occur to me that the 90 degree twist in the belt though the boom means that which ever way you twist the belt will change the direction of the tail rotor. A real shame as I have spent over 3 weeks (and about $100) installing various parts that I thought it "could" of been. At least I now have enough spares to recover from most future accidents ! I can have fun again this weekend - thanks again! Once again, thanks to all who replied. Regards, Ellis p.s. At the advice of most other people on this thread I have also ordered an MCPx to play with. |

I know from reading some older blade 400 posts that the trex 450 canopy does fit the blade 400 I believe the 400 and 450 are pretty much the same size. Let us know what you had to mod to get it to fit. Thanks in advance |

I'm using a blade 400 canopy on my 450 after a massive crash( while flying in the wind against my better judgement). It works but it's real tight-even after trimming on it some. It is against the battery pack I believe. I'd like to know if the trex canopy works-might be a good investment.
