6S Lipo life cut short?
I have two Wild Scorpion 3500 mah 6s 22v Lipo batteries. I have had them two years. Probably 50-75 flights. Never puffed always stored at 60% charge with my Hyperion 720i charger. I haven't used them for 6 months. Stored them on my bookshelf.
Today I tried to charge them. The first one only showed 5 cells. I tested the battery and one cell was flat...about .1v charged. I tried to charge them on a board with the other battery and it puffed up and split the battery .... bugger! I had one flight with the other battery and when I went to charge it it only had 5 cells too! Do these things expire on the shelf or something? |

storage temperature. I store at some 12°C (54°F) and check storage, at least every 3 month. At higher storage temperature, they age and discharge faster. Regards, Bo

It looks like only one cell puffed, the others appear visually to be perfect. My guess is simple the batteries each had a bad cell, it does happen.
But as already noted, it's good practice to store in a cool place, elevated temperature caused the battery to go downhill much more quickly, even when at correct storage charge. Some people would take a good cell from one battery and use it to replace the bad one in the other battery, meaning you have at least one working battery. If it's a good idea to attempt this depends on how confident you are at soldering, especially soldering aluminium. If in any doubt don't try it.

I've owned 28 6S 3300mah-5000mah packs over the past 4 years. Only one pack (nano-tech 6S 65C 5000mah) came with a bad cell. I've used Glacier, Pulse Ultra, Zippy, Turnigy, nano-tech, and Revolectrix.

My guess is that the cell of 2nd battery got damaged when you connected the packs in parallel using the board as there was too much of a difference in voltage between the 0.1V bad cell and the presumably 3.78V to 3.85V good cell.

Thank you for everyone's input, much appreciated.
I have discharged the puffed battery with a light bulb set up and is now in a bucket of salt water. I am about to reluctantly discharge the second wild scorpion as it looks like brand new.. But yes my balance charger still says one dead cell...and my Lipo checker says the same.....Important learning curve then in my hobby of RC Helicopters! I have bought my new lipos and also flame proof STORAGE BAGS as my 3 2200mah 11v 3s lipos were all in good condition stored in the same room as the wild scorpions but we're in an Align Battery case.... Could be a better way to store batteries than on a shelf? |

I have had a battery do that during storage at 3.85V. Mine had a cell that split-opened by itself during storage but was fine 8 months before when it was used in my heli. Probably had 100 cycles on it and it was a cheapie brand. Sometimes they do go bad at storage especially if they have been used for more than 70 cycles. Battery quality plays a major role in this, which is why you rarely see such cases with more reputable brands. But no matter the brand, it is a good practise to check them once a month during long term storage.
+1, that is more than likely what destroyed the second battery.
