Normal Vibration Levels?
Hi folks,
Can anyone shed some light on just what is considered normal for airframe/tail vibrations? When they are new or completely dialed in are they almost vibration free? Unfortunately I don't have a reference point for what normal vibrations should be on this heli. The original owner crashed it in 10 seconds, replaced the tail case, and assumed the rest was fine. I flew it for a good 3 hours before my first epic crash that caused near total destruction. During that flight time I thought the vibrations seemed fine and wasn't alarmed. However, with the GoPro mounted on it I noticed that it produced extremely shaky video so I paid closer attention and realized that yes it did have some slight vibrations. Now, having gone through nearly everything on this rebuild I am trying to figure out if I have it dialed or if I need to chase what little vibes I have left and can actually expect it to smooth out and maybe produce some quality onboard footage. Thanks!

A lot of camera mounts have vibration dampening. No matter how smooth the heli is, it will still have some vibration, and that will show on camera.
You need to get rid of whatever vibration is necessary to make the heli FLY the way you want. Without another pilot and heli to compare yours to, you just need to develop a feel for it. As you fly/crash/build, you'll begin to notice little things as your personal tolerance for vibes gets tighter. So, don't drive yourself crazy trying to get rid of all the vibes that show up in the video. Instead, invest in a decent mount, and make sure that the heli is flying right.

If you spool up until the heli is light on the skids does it vibrate and move around(on a smooth hard surface)? Mine sits still until I lift off but I have the trex 500 skid with rubber cushions. I get the heli in a hover and look at the skids and tail fins/boom supports. If these are blurry I start looking for bent shafts, bad bearings and(on the 4503d) the tail case screws being too tight.

Thanks guys,
I'd say it sits pretty still during runup to full RPM. I too have 500 gear with rubbers. For the most part I'd say it is pretty well balanced out and really only has slight vibrations. The tail fin appears to vibrate some in flight, but not constant and not too bad. Maybe I could post a video next to show you guys. Like you said Gladius, I'll probably have to just try to get to a flying field or something where others are flying in order to do a comparison. For now I'll just fly it, I think it's pretty good. As for the camera mounting; I found that when its mounted to the bottom of the frame (leaving the skids in view, which is not ideal) the camera footage seems pretty smooth. I'm thinking that by having the camera where I had it (in place of the battery, with the battery strapped to the frame bottom) that the gopro mount allows too much vibration, which I believe is a common problem in many applications, so I'll have to keep experimenting. I do like those rubberized feet mounting plates that are being used these days on the gimbals and such, I'll probably try something like that.
