600 dfc wearing out torque tube gears.
Good Evening all,
I'm scratching my head a bit with this not sure where to put my finger on it, the heli is a new build latest 600 dfc with the 750mx. The tail isn't brilliant on it, it's not as good as my efl was it kicks out a bit even with revomix on the beastx on high, I never ran revo on my efl and was pretty happy but it only had the 600mx in it. I've just been giving it a once over checking everything to make sure it's all good and noticed dust around the umbrella gears. I've pulled them out and they have worn quite a bit and it has only done 16 flights. My gov gain is at 13 and I run a headspeed of 2300. My efl was up at 17 iirc and never wore a gear out in 100 flights until I decked it lol I had set it all up with the govenor gain a lot lower than I usually would, it would drop headspeed at the bottom of a loop. I've brought it back up a step at a time until it holds a consistent headspeed. The gearmesh on the dfc umbrella gears doesn't seem to be any different to what my efl was, it's loose now they're worn but was good when built. Is it something I'm going to have to live with running a bigger motor or are the black gears weaker, or do I need to change some things? I've got spare gears so that's no prob. Ta |

That's strange. i've stripped those gears but never seen any significant wear. I'd have said governor gain but you have covered that base already. The black gear are supposed to be stronger and harder wearing than the old white ones.
On mine i shimmed the gears with a 0.2mm shim washer behind the TT umbrella gear to tighten the mesh a little. In my case this was more about stopping the gear stripping than to prevent wear but you might give it a try.

I just stripped my black tail gears doing some fast pitch pumps a couple of days ago. I would say it was close to 20 flights on those gears and I was putting the wax lube on them every 6 flights, but didn't do a close inspection for wear. I have the 750mx, KDE boom case and was running 106mm rail tail blades. Using the CC ESC with gov gain 12, head speed change 18, and 2153 head speed. Any recommendations to avoid stripping the gears would be appreciated. Think I should not be doing many fast pitch pumps??

Align recommends the red wheel grease on these gears to extend the life. Like 6 bucks for a jar that will last longer than you.

+1, I have had my umbrella gears last a lot longer just by using some synthetic grease and tightening up the mesh between the 2 umbrella gears using shims so that at the higher spots there is very little or no backlash. I am using the 600mx, but these tips should also apply to the 750mx.

I shimmed the umbrella gears as suggested and checked the tail ones also, at the same time also added some of the align grease to the gears which resulted in the heli being significantly quieter and it reduced vibrations massively. 5 more flights on the weekend just gone and they're still like new.
I was having an issue with the tail having a very slow wag while flying backwards slowly that I couldn't sort out and it seems to have cured that too Only thing left to sort which I think I may have found the problem is why the tail was oscilating on fast left turns. (One of the small brass bushings had a small amount of loctite on it) |

+1 on the shimming - loose mesh is what wears these - and more susceptible to stripping - not lack of lube....

Where do you get the washer for the umbrella gear? And am I right in assuming it goes between the umbrella gear case, and the gear itself?

I ended up pulling mine apart again and shimming it.
I watched this video a couple of times and purchased some 4x6 Kyosho shims which had 0.1-0.3 shims in. Then I put a .2mm under the tail drive gear as the TT gear never needed adjusting. I bought mine off ebay. |
