Default Futaba GY701 Gyro/Gov Review & Setup

Latest in the line of Futaba offerings is the GY701 which has effectively combined the GY611 gyro and GV-1 governor into one box with a new sensor. The sensor has higher specs than the GY520 yet is supposed to be easier to setup and be less vibe affected. I was lucky enough to be joined by Futaba Field Rep Gavin Broadbent. Gav has a vast experience of flying and has had the GY701 up and running for the past month. We intend to show you the kit, installation and basic setup then Gav will have some advanced tips for the more experienced users.

Default GY 701 - Mounted on Furion 450

Here are some pics of the GY 701 mounted on my Furion 450. This is by far the best gyro I have used, it is a little smaller then the 520 footprint. Rock solid hold and speed. I have not used the governor - but when I figure out how to mount the the mags I will let you know the verdict. I highly recommend

Just wondering what is the benefit of having this gyro on an electric heli?

A GY520 is much smaller and performs great, no reason to have drift or excessive vibration on an electric?
On a nitro it sounds great though because you can use the gov also

Is the voltage output regulated?

It is reckoned to be more vibe resistant than the 520 and so far experience bears this out. It has a higher piro rate 1200°/sec as opposed to the 800°/sec of the 520 so if fast piro is your thing you will stay more in control and lastly you can use the gov output into an ESC to gov your electric motor if you fix up a mechanical sensor !!

Default GY 701 Gyro

Hi John,

All the flight test I have done so far have been 100% with this gyro. (mounted on a Furion 450). I am building my first 90 size this winter and cannot wait to order another on of these and get it up in the air.

Yes I am keen too to try the ESC regulation - the Japanese apparently use this a lot for F3C - you obviously have to have ESC gov switched off and fixed endpoints - the gyro and gov integrate and I sure this will be off benfit in the electric heli!

Changed my trusty GY520 and GV-1 in my Srimok 90 to a GV-1 and changed to an S-BUS receiver too - very nice integration, 5 leads reduced down to 2 - much neater - I plan to do a full S-BUS system inc servos on my next build

Anyway this gyro shows the S-Bus setup including setting the S-Bus menu on the GY701 which is not hard.

Thanks for the information, John. There's not a whole lot of people going the SBus route with heli's yet. There are many advantages though.

I can't wait for the expert tips video. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys - I'm really excited about s-bus - just one lead to a Mini V-Bar or Rx is really exciting to me. Next build I do will be all S-Bus - servos - bus - Rx would love the GY750 to be out too but I guess I'll have to wait for that - got 2 helis to build - a Kasama ECO FBL nitro or a Trex 700E F3C - I think I'll do the Kasama first with the new VBAR v5 linked up with SBus but looking forward to the T700E F3C too - that would be great with a GY701 and SB!! What to do ? !!!

Posted video of going through the basic menus - Gyro and Gov. Setup shown using a Futaba Tx which makes setup VERY easy - I intend to put a 701 on my MA Stratus which I fly with a DSX9 so will show how to use switches and the gov menu to turn on/off and set rpm.

Have already test flown with Gav and this thing is locked in straight out of the box - I really like the integration between gyro-gov - for instance there's a yaw compensation option oin the Gov menu so when you punch out the gov senses change of HS and feeds in a little tail correction to keep it straight

Does anybody know if this is the same gov input sensor ? I know I want to upgrade to this on my gasser and was wondering if my Stator Gator Gov input from my G26 on my Bergen eb was going to work , or if I'd have to swap out sensors too . If the sensor are the same does that mean I'd only have to buy the gyro only version ? and just reuse my sensors ????????

Not sure exactly what you're asking but the GV1 sensor works fine with Gy701
