Default HP03t Tail Motor.. Finally!

Just got a call from my wife:
"You know that package you've been waiting for from China?"

"Yeah?"

"It just got delivered."

I ordered an HP03t (old, 12 pole style) from Oversky RC on Feb. 22 to pair up with an esc I got from Steffen months ago.

I get back home late tonight, so tomorrow is going to be spent setting up my HP05s with an HP03t tail! Just gotta fly from Raleigh-Durham to Nashville, then to New Orleans, then to Vegas, then a two hour drive home.

Dylan and Steffen: Wouldn't have been possible without these guys.

Hey SuperBee,

Let me know the next time in the Raleigh area. I live an hour from the airport.

Nice!

Still waiting on Dylan's shipment of ESC's and Motors myself. Hopefully he gets them soon, I'm really antsy to try this tail.

You're gonna need the full two acres... Might give you enough room to roll on the ground laughing at my meager flying skills! I can fly a 30 million dollar Boeing pretty well, but a couple hundred buck heli brings me to my knees. Maybe you can give me some pointers, and wring out my double brushless hp05s!

Will be great to see Dylan stocking these. I have a feeling I'm gonna need more of 'em.

Most likely. I found out from Dylan (after I'd already ordered from Oversky) that wow hobbies carries the 12 pole version.

Me too, Spunjah! The walkera tail esc has been sitting on my desk for months!

I'm going to have to wait a few more days, though. I ordered some soldering paste to make the signal wire easier to solder as well as the small wires on this tiny esc, and it hasn't arrived yet.

I'm also going to order some of those tiny bullet connectors from Dylan. I know everyone says to direct solder the motors to the esc, but it seems like I'm always messing with things and needing to remove the motor wires from the esc. It'll also make swapping in other motors easier.

Ah well... waited this long, another few days won't hurt.

Some crappy cell phone pics of the tail.

The motor mount and tail fin are from Astroid Designs (of course!).

Once again, the quality and thought that Dylan puts in to his designs is top notch. Notice the small hole to pass the motor wires through. The mount itself is a perfect fit for the hp03t motor. The set screw holds it firmly in place, and as usual, the pieces are an EXACT fit.

Edit: Also note how the tail fin extends above the motor housing, providing crash damage protection. Dylan didn't miss a trick on this design.

Hey, I noticed that you got the HP03t new version... what main motor are you pairing that with? Steffen and Dylan have reported that the HP03t new version doesn't quite have the ooomph that the old version does.

Are you going to flash your own esc?

I missed them saying that the 8800kv was weaker.. but I am pairing it with the 16300 motor. I am doing a second mCPx double brushless low power setup so I will order an 8000kv to compare.

The changes he recently made to the code are some pretty compelling reasons to pony up the 18 bucks for the stuff needed to flash them. Guess I should get it ordered.

Def worth investing into, especially after talking to Dylan via PM, he told me this

The updates just keep getting better and better, and assuming you want all the new features he adds, you will need the flash unit to keep up.

Surely the software now has come a long way from it's starting point, which was just the standard BLDC motor control stuff that you find in appnotes from every MCU manufacturer. And even the bits and pieces of that has been totally rewritten.
Well, we'll see what comes in the future But now more outdoor flying since spring is here - and less programming. But there always comes more winters...
Anyway, I just sent a test code to Dylan for damped operation of a brushed motor. Will be interesting to hear what he says.

Eagerly awaiting your feedback on how you go SuperBee.

I am thinking of just laying down the bucks for the flash unit and do it myself, can also offer some kind of service to others like me on this side of the ditch

Great idea, I'll bet there's a ton of guys needing flashes done "down unda".

Looks like I'll have to get the toolstick sooner rather than later. I crashed earlier today, and for some reason my xp-7a is no longer getting a throttle signal. I assumed it would just be a broken signal wire connection at either the resistor solder point or the solder point on the xp-7a. Both connections were fine, but still no throttle signal.

I swapped out the xp-7a for my Oversky 10 esc, and soldered the same signal wire to it. It worked great. Swapped the xp-7a back in, and no throttle.

So I installed the Oversky. Still get a bit of stuttering now and then with it, but it's getting throttle signal just fine.

Guess I killed my xp-7a in the crash.

I've only flown a few batteries through the Oversky, and I already miss the governed xp-7a. It's soooo nice to be able to tame down the head speed for indoor flight.

Just for grins, I set my tx to a 60% flat throttle curve to try with the Oversky, to see how it compared to running it governed at 60% with the xp-7a. It would hardly lift off the ground before it started losing rpm. There's just no substitute for a governor.
