Default Thinking of Electric

hi all

I currently have a Raptor 90se and Trex 600 nitro super pro, but i am thinking of getting an electric heli, was thinking of either a trex 500 or trex 600 ??

Any ideas, might look in the long run of converting to electric, just an idea tho as i do like nitro ...

I love my 500, and as you can see I also fly nitro.

You might want to look into the T-550, I've seen a couple fly at my field and all I can say is WOW!!!!

the x5 is one bad ass machine. nothing else out there can touch that thing performance wise. the X5 is a true beast. the t rex 550 is bad ass also and out preforms the 500 and the 600E, the 600 is known to be really underpowered on a 6 cell battery's

the 500 is great and a great size for park flying, if i had the room to fly one and the money to fly one i would either get the t rex 550 or the gaui x5 witch is also a 550 size.. but i will stick with my 500.

The new Fusion50 form Outrage is a serious machine, same size as the 600, but about the same flying weight as a 550.

For a 600 size Compass 6HV would my choice- unbelievable in stock format.

I love my 500 because of it's relatively small size and therefore portability and convenience to pop down my local field. In my mind it flys pretty damn good as well.

Sounds like you need to decide what's most important to you before deciding what suits you best between the 500 to 600 class machines.

The thing is, that you already have a 90 and a 50 sized machine. So why not try something smaller and more agile, but still bad ass and fast? In completely stock form, the X5 just can't be touched. I have a 12s 600ESP beast and it is a dog compared to the X5. Take a look at the X5 forums and you'll find a loyal following and for a reason.

I fly my 500 and X5 often, but the 500 is really just the warm-up heli before I launch the rocket. Think of a very large hornet, and now pretend you tried to swat it and missed... that would be one very pissed off hornet. Put a receiver on it and you've got the idea....

Being a previous X5 owner I would say it’s a monster and worth every penny. I have read and heard many complaints about the Trex 550 (I fly Align BTW). See for yourself how many Trex 550’s are for sale at this moment compared to X5’s.

X5 frame for sale here:

https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=282222

Only reason I sold my X5 was my fleet was too large and my family was getting larger. Ability and time to fly was becoming an issue so I made a decision to sell the most popular heli so I could get the highest return on investment.

The X5 is a heli on steroids. I have yet to find an owner who regrets purchasing one.

Yea the X5 is a serious monster 500 blade machine! But if you go the 600mm route, the 6HV sure seems to be the "best in breed" I have a 12S Trex 600 and I love it, but if I was shopping for a 600mm blade now, I would go with the 6HV or a Logo!

Yeah, I think a Logo 600SE or Trex 700E are my next viable options if I were to purchase in the distant future.

I've been thinking for months about the Logo 600SE, but its price is just ridiculous. Talk about gouging you since there isn't any competition to sell it here in the US.

You can get a new Synergy N6E pretty soon. Maybe it will be available in march! This thing dominates all electric helis of it's size. I see the prototype fly almost every weekend. It is insane.

I wouldn't even consider the 600SE, I don't want a 600 class that has been "stretched" to a 690 blade machine... But the Logo 600 sure is one fine piece of kit!

Yeah and its a plastic head/tail with a belt drive from what I gather. Not that I am saying such parts are junk but generally plastic and rubber cost less than aluminum and CF TT so why charge so much more.

The hype from the Logo 600 folowers is there and Bert K is now flying a Logo 600SE. That must mean something after being with Align for so many years.

No.. Bert is flying a Logo 600, not an SE. And as I understand it... he paid for it out of pocket...
I didn't say I think doing a stretch is a bad thing, just that I would not care to have a 600 stretched to a 700. I am waiting till Mikado comes out with a dedicated 700, then I will look deep into it's viability. But a logo 600 is such a good balance of performance, flight time, speed, and power, I think stretching it unbalances the whole thing!

That and it kinda looks ugly

I think we are diverting off topic....myself included.

Electric helis are nice but you need to weigh the pros and cons and decide what is important for your needs. For example:

Electric:

Pros:
No oil residue to clean after flights
Allowed where some nitros birds may not be
More powerful motors when compared to equivalent nitro sized motor
Price per flight is cheaper
No motor tuning from warm to cold days
No need to purchase and carry around nitro fuel
Growing popularity as lipo technology increases and cost decreases

Cons:
Cost of charger and lipos have an initial upfront cost as compared to a gallon of fuel over time
5 min flight times (average) as compared to 20-30 min nitro (average)
Electric does not sound as cool (personal opinion really)
Overall price to build seems to be more expensive (esc+motor+lipo vs motor+fuel)

As you can seem I am biased but you get the idea. I did a lot of this when I first joined the hobby and I have yet to regret my decision for an electric fleet.

Agreed we should stay on topic!

Nitros get 7 or 8 min of flight time with comparable performance...

I still think a 6HV is an awesome 600mm blade machine and worthy of serious consideration!
