If you are currently flying helis, look into the Foamy section about the Park Zone T-28.

This is a good thread:

Any thing deamed a TRAINER airplane is good. If your looking to stay in model airplanes for along time and want a trainer that will have full function there are many ARF trainers out there. Almost no kit builds. Check out tower hobbies name brand trainers they should do well for u.

Default Apprentice

I asked a friend who is into high performance RC planks (turbines, pylon racers) and he recommended the E-flite Apprentice as a plane that is easy and entertaining enough to keep you interested.

On reading reviews, it appears to be good enough to keep even experienced pilots entertained, is capable of aerobatics, and docile enough for a beginner. I'm planning to get one next month.

Just picked up one of these from Tower for $78. Used engine from RC groups for $40 and 3 new 821 servos for $60. I have everything else to get it in the air. Pretty cool for less than $200 out of pocket. Lets hope I can keep it in one piece. Haven't flown an RC plane in about 25 years and never was very good at it.
