I did it! I flipped the bird!
So i know this isn't a big deal to a lot of you here - but i'm excited and wanted to post. I had gotten into RC heli's a couple years back, but got frustrated (money and time issues) and had some personal life issues come up and had to take a break for a year or so.
Well, i got back into the hobby a couple of months ago (it's scary how much of a vortex this hobby is) and have been putting in a ton of sim time. I have also spent some good time with the mcp x, which has really helped my flying. Today was my first time ever flipping a heli (other than the mcp x). I did a couple of flips at the end of a flight and my hands were trembling. It is a BIG difference when it's a sizable heli. I went in and got my camera and decided to make a video of it and put it on here. Fortunately, i didn't crash. I apologize for the poor camera work (it's my phone on a chair - i don't have a lot of support in this hobby, heh). Anyways, i'm super excited about it and really view this as a big step forward for me to trying more tricks. The 450x has been a very confidence inspiring heli to me and i'm hoping it's gonna take me from very mild sport flying (i've really just flown forward and backward circuits) to some mild 3d. I'm hoping to share my progress with you all as I meet each new milestone. The flying part starts at ~1 minute - i'll work something out so that my videos turn out a bit better in the future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZZvP...ature=youtu.be |

Hey, that some nice flying in my book.
I flip my 450x, but way up high, lol. But bringing the flip a lot lower. |

CONGRATS!!
I was just out hovering y new 450X and was quite surprised by the amount of power this thing has! Not your uncles mCPX lol. I imagine some day I will bite bullet and just go for it. In the mean time I will just keep trying with my mCPX for awhile lol.
Nice job! enjoy, soon you will be doing piro flips. Happy Flying! MX |

Very nice flying! Especially so close to ground and so controlled and calm

Thanks for the compliments guys! Now i just need my charger and batteries to get here so i can fly it more! Next step is going to be inverted circuits and funnels - then stationary flips. We'll see how long it takes me to work up the guts to try those!

VERY nice work there- I even saw a slow inverted pirouette there- so I'd say all your sim work has paid off. You looked cool as a cucumber- and were doing them lower than I would have expected!

Dude, is that with the stock TX settings? Wat tail blades are those, and is the bird stock other then the tail blades , that was so sweet, just got into FF, with mine not even close to flip it yet.

Great flips!
You actually inspired me to go out and try some flips today. Mine weren't close to the ground like your ones as I can't hover reliably inverted but I did some full loops and then started doing big half loops with flips at the top and then half pike turns through to big curving high speed banks. Was still awesome though and I was laughing out loud. I'll have to work on the sim to get my inverted flying down! |

Excellent work! Looks like jchandler is going to have some competition before long.
Still going ridiculously high with mine (100'+) just as I dumb-thumb my orientations way too much still. Continue having trouble with a 100% flip rate on the mCPX as well.

Thanks again guys!
HFMan - the sim work has DEFINITELY paid off. I have trained and trained my orientations on the sim and i think that's the only reason i wasn't freaking out when the heli was upside down. jetskier - the heli is stock except for the kbdd 61mm tail blades (i usually go with orange for visibility but wanted to try something different). My transmitter settings are adjusted to my liking. I know this may seem twitchy to some but i run 100% D/R with 10% expo on ail/ele and 0% expo on tail and that's just the way i like it. Failuretofly - go out there and get that heli upside down! to be honest, i know it's probably a good idea to fly a little bit higher, but i can't do that in my yard and I'm too lazy to go to a field around here, heh. However, i can say that i have certainly had crashes where i ended up getting too high/far away and really just lost the orientation and never got it back. Talesin - i'm certainly not anywhere near jchandler at this point - But if it's friendly competition that pushes us to get better, i'm all for it! If work doesn't brutalize me this week, hopefully i'll be able to put in a good bit of stick time and come up with a new video next weekend! I love the support on the forums! |

Congrats man, some people will fly circuits for years without doing a loop. Your pushing your limits hence the shaking we all have it when we are near our limits. Awesome work, push it on the sim and perfect your stick movements and you'll be rocking them constantly smoothly soon enough

Very cool man! You're story sounds very similar to mine as I also tried to get into the hobby a couple years ago and took a bit of a hacienda but have finally got the means to get back into it. The excitement/reward of pushing my limits and learning new things is too much fun!

I use Phoenix and I found that loops were WAY slower in real life than the sim. This was on both my 450X and 450 3D.
The sim I can do a full flip on the spot in a split second. Essentially going flip, flip, flip all 360 degree ones after the other but in RL, if you zoom into a loop and then do a 360 flip it takes a few seconds to go right around. Hands were ashaking yesterday as well...but in a good way! |

Still, good to hear that you came back to it! Definitely a rewarding hobby just on its own... but even more-so flying at local parks (with only a few people around, of course). Especially when you go inverted and just hover.. almost no one expects them to be able to do that.

Tulo - i'm glad we're both back to the sticks!
FTF - the sim and real flying are definitely different. Not sure why, but clockwise forwards inverted circuits are freaking me out in real life - they're not a problem for me on the sim, but the heli just responds a little differently in real life. guy - thanks for the post. there are certainly some benchmarks that i got a big adrenaline rush from. my first was just hovering and landing smoothly. then nose-in hovering. then my first circuits. going inverted was the next rush! sambuka - we all certainly know that *pucker* feeling when you're a bit on the edge. |
