Default Question for Drevil02/Michael

Hi Michael,
I started to cut and mod the frame on the T744 and noticed that the CF frame once cut is pretty close to the interchange on the turbine. (See attached photo of your T744)...

Is this a problem? Doesn't the heat degrade the carbon fiber or at least burn it?

Deron,

Sorry for the late response. If it were close it would. The pictures are deceiving because of the rate of bend of the turbine housing in these areas. Actually there is a more than 3mm gap between the CF frame members and the turbine housing. While this particular area is the hottest part of the engine, the air cap coupled with the fact that it is sitting under a relatively giant fan (rotor blades) means that even with the canopy attached there is a fair amount of air movement. The effect is not so much cooling as it is lack of heat transfer. The other factor is that carbon (not necessarily the resin used to bind it) is incredibly heat tolerant (a couple of my cars use carbon ceramic brake rotors which have a life span about as long as the car itself). If you are cutting your frames from scratch, take material off slowly. This section forms the lower corner of a "box frame" which connects to the floor and thus the rear of the heli.

Thanks Michael for your input. That makes sense. I posted pics of my moded frame with the engine attached BTW... worked out pretty well.
