Electrical help
I have the dynamite passport duo charger that is ac/dc ( built in power supply ). It has 2 channels with each channel capable of 200watts and 10amps. If I want to use both channels at 10amps at the same time, does that mean I need a generator that will put out atleast 400 watts and 20 amps? It's hard to find small portable generator's that put out 20 amps.

Even a 1000W Honda would be way overkill for that tiny charger but it will work fine and have more power for more chargers later.
You could easily use a deep cycle battery since it takes DC. Remember generators put out 110V and the charger power supply converts this to 12v (or so) therefore you would only need a very small generator.

Quote:
Power = Volts * Amps Amps = Power / Volts To put out 400W, at 110V: Amps = 400W/110V = 3.6A output from the generator For picking a generator, worry about just the power, the 400W. As Slyster said, any generator will put out 400W. The EU1000i will put out 800W continuous, and would be more than sufficient.

Do you use a generator? if so, what one?

95% of the time I use two deep cycles. For big funflys like IRCHA I use a Boliy 3500W generator (it's usually for my camper and it's air conditioner)

Well I found a good used yamaha ef1000i generator for sale cheap and will probably pick it up today. I hope your right about it being able to allow me to charge at 10 amps on both channels.

It will.
I have that exact same generator and it it gives me about 12A on each channel of a Hyperion EOS720 Super Duo 3. I could probably go a bit higher but haven't tried. Just keep the economy switch in the OFF position when charging at hight rates.

What happens if I have it on economy mode? won't the generator just rev up like it's suppose to?

That's how my Honda inverter works. It can produce 1600W in either throttle mode. In Eco mode, it slows the RPM down, and raises it back up as the load increases.
The difference is that with Eco mode off (that is, with the engine running at full-load RPM the whole time), it can better handle sudden loads. It will start my old window A/C with Eco mode off. In Eco mode, it's at a much lower RPM. The A/C compressor kicks on, and the engine can't rev up in time before something trips out. I've heard that some of the Hyperions ramp their output currents up quickly. Perhaps too quickly for the generator to throttle up in time, if running in Economy mode? That might be what 3D Dave was talking about. If we speculate that he's charging 6S, that would be about 600W of output at 12A+12A (approaching 800W from the generator, making efficiency assumptions about the charger and power supply), or close to a full load for a 1000W inverter generator. 400W from your charger would be a smaller load. And if your charge ramps up more slowly, that would help give the generator time to react.

Cool, I got ya! I can't wait for my charger to get back from horizon ( internal power supply burned out ) so I can actually try it. I believe ya'll that the generator will handle it but there's nothing like trying it out. I broke my back in a dirt bike accident so the lightness of the 1000 watt vs the 2000 watt really helps out. It only weighs about 27 pounds. Plus I just think these generators are cool as hell!

I really like my EU2000i, but I got to pick up a friend's EU1000i at the field. It definitely is much lighter and easier to carry around.
And I know what you mean on the generators themselves. For whatever reason, I like them too. The inverters are so quiet and efficient, which is part of the appeal (plus very clean output power). My 5500W for the house is really loud, and a gas-guzzler, by comparison. For future outages, I can use the inverter to run things like some lights, the TV & laptops, and perhaps fridge (or furnace), with minimal noise, and very low gas consumption. Then fire up the big one when needed. With a 400W load, mine will run 10 hours on a gallon of gas. Even with no load at all, my big one burns quite a bit more than that. That's nice in general, and even more important when gas is suddenly tough to get at all.
