GY401 heading hold help
I have a flybar trex 450 sport v2 with a GY401 gyro. My DX6i settings are switch 0 is set at 40% which I believe is heading hold because the red light is solid. However I can't increase the gyro gain. If I go above 40% the red light flashes assuming it is no longer in HH mode. Switch 1 is set to 65% and I'm assuming that is rate mode since the light turns off. Everything I read says that anything above 50% is HH mode which is why I'm confused. Any thoughts? Is it ok to keep it like this as long as it flies good?

I tried that setup several times it still won't go above 40%. I guess I'll just have to try it out in the field to see if it holds

On the dx6, below 50% is rate mode, above is HH. HH is usually set at about 67%.

I sometimes have a problem with the 401 when I plug in and the red light flashes. The solution is to flip the gyro switch a few times to get the gyro to reset. I don't know if that is your problem, just thinking.

Have to ask so we don't assume anything, but you do have the DX6i set to "Gyro" menu , correct? And gain wire is plugged in with correct polarity? Also make sure the gyro channel is not reversed. Remove any trim (not subtrim). Set gyro gain values on 0 and 1 and rebind. I have mine set as 0=HH, 1=Rate (only used for set-up). Travel at 100% on rudder and gyro. Hmmm now that I think of it, the gyro needs to be in HH when booting up or it may not initilize at all.

GY401 heading hold help
You guys are awesome! Thanks for helping me figure that out. I had to reverse the gyro channel on my radio. Now it works above 50%! The reason I wanted to change because when I was flying last week for the first time the tail held really well, but when I would give it throttle and pitch the tail would blow out. So I figured by raising the gyro gain % that it might help?

What is your current HH setting? If your getting tail blow-out, you can try raising the gain. It's probably going to end up in the 60-68% range. Could be low HS also. What are your TC's?

Most do not run a linear TC as you are in Normal. Try a 0-50-100-100-100 Normal TC so that you will have a constant HS (Headspeed). I'm sure it will fly much better for you. 51% gain is way to low. That's more than likely the problem now. If you get tail wag with 65%, start dropping that value about 3-4% at a time until the tail wag goes away. And you have verified the gyro is working in the correct direction? Moving the tail to the right (as veiwed from the rear of heli) should make the tail servo arm move forward. If it's not correct, change the Nor/Rev switch on the gyro.

Well I'm an idiot I forgot to change the throttle curve, but I had the gain up 73% and the tail held better. It still blew out a little with quick positive pitch but it wasn't as bad. I'll try the new throttle curve next week. The other thing I noticed is that it seemed to drift to the right while hovering. Not sure if that's normal of if I should adjust it with trim?

Personally, I don't like to use trim on the rudder. Drift could come from various reasons. Vibration, tail slider set-up, low mechanical gain, gyro mounting tape used. What distance do you have the tail servo ball from center? Did you set the tail pitch slider in the center or offset with some right pitch? And the tail set-up is usually done while in rate mode. 73% sounds kind of on the high side and could indicate low mechanical gain or servo ball to close to center. A lot of the Align manuals say about 7.5mm from center for the 450's. Spartan suggests 9.5mm. So there is some gray area there and different opinions on wheather or not to set the slider with 0* pitch or set the slider with 6*-8* pitch or just set it to hold when flying in rate mode. I would first try the 0-50-100-100-100-100 and see if that helps any. And making one change at a time is a good idea.

Hey thanks again wanderer. I finally flew it today with the TC that you recommended and it flew awesome. The tail held at full positive pitch pumps. I like the constant head speed too. This heli flies really well. If I can only get the balls to try a loop!

Cool to hear that it's flying well now. If you don't have a sim, watch the flight training vids. https://www.helifreak.com/forumdisplay.php?f=242
