I last flew one of these 5 years ago, and have since lost my DX6i. My son, however, has a new DXS that came with a Hobbyzone plane. So, can I fly one with this transmitter? I fly all my helis on a JR transmitter, and don't want to buy another Spektrum just so I can buy a new MCPX.

In Europe there are new Etsi norms (since 2015) which require frequency channel hopping (Fhss).
The old Mcpx V2 is Dsm2 only. Newer Spektrum transmitters only support DSMx. If you live in the Us you might have luck with Dsm2 support in the radio.
