Default GT15HZ Ignition Module Broken?

I think my GT15HZ ignition module is broken.

I went to start the GT15HZ engine, just as it seemed to start it stopped, so I tried to start it and it would not go.

So I primed it a bit, more, gave it a bit more throttle etc. Nothing.

I pulled out the spark plug, and I noticed the carbon build up has closed the electrode gap. I cleaned the spark plug, connected the spark plug to the ignition module, and I turned the engine, watching the spark plug electrode, no spark.

I connected a new spark plug, turned the engine hoping to see a spark, nothing.

So, has anyone had this happen to them? or had a ignition module die on them?

I tried a different battery, checked all the connections etc. so I dont know what else it could be, its kind of narrowed down a little.

Did you ground the plug to the head when you were looking for spark?
Maybe inspect the power wires for areas they could be broken inside the insulation?
But you have done most of the usual tests.

With these EI units the plug is grounded through the metal cap. Touching it to the head won't do anything.

I've never heard of so much carbon build up that it had closed the gap in a spark plug. Try a fresh plug that has been gapped correctly.

For whatever reason the connection between the crank sensor and EI unit attracts oil like crazy. Check to make sure it's clean and all the wiring is happy.

However, if you don't see a spark then the unit is dead and has to be replaced. They cannot be fixed, I tried pulling one of my dead ones apart and it is encased in potting compound.

New modules from rcjapan.net are $49: Link

Default Those things die, not as reliable as a magneto

When I had my G20 in a Radikal 20, I lost one of the ignition modules and had to replace it with another. A little bit more finniky starting sometimes but when they work all is well. Not a big surprise that it died on you, just get another.

Update

Engine now works.

It turned out the rotation sensor was dead.
