Default First gyro change

I did my first gyro change last night. Out of the appx 200 boards I have repaired this is the first bad gyro. They are tough little suckers.

Anyways, I know it is something you do not get to see often and I know there are people that like to map out the signals on the board. So, I included a picture to help you follow traces should you ever need to.

The board has not been cleaned yet so it looks a mess.

This is the front gyro from a v1 board. It is responsible for yaw only. When looking at the picture there are two black components (resistors) under the land for the chip. The one on the right side as viewed in this picture is the gyro signal output to the MCU.

Man, that looks pretty intense! Is the gyro working like it is supposed to now?

What's the best way to clean the board?

Yes the new gyro works like a champ.

The best thing to clean a board is isopropyl alcohol (IPA) AKA rubbing alcohol. The closer to 100% the better.

Nicely done man!

Do wipe the board with the alcohol or do dunk the board in it?

Does the IPA take the conformal coat off, or did you need something else to get that off before removing the chip?

You can do either. I do both depending on how gross the board is.

No it does not. The IPA is safe for all board components. I remove the epoxy around the chip with a hot scraper. The heat crystalizes the epoxy and the scraper easily removes it.

Curious, what did you replace the gyro with, did you order something from Digikey or from spare board?

I was concerned that submerging the board in the alcohol would short something out but it's good to know that's not the case.

Alcohol is great. In fact if you get an electrical component wet, most of the time, one of the best things you can do to save it is immediately submerge it in IPA.

My son decided to clean his nintendo DS by giving it a bath. He showed me his newly cleaned ds with water pouring out of every seam. I immediately pulled the battery then submerged the entire DS in about 3 inches of IPA in a plastic container. After letting it soak for a week (didn't have time to work on it) I took apart the case to let the IPA dry. Put it back together the next day and now it runs like a champ.

Default Hi

My family owned a TV and electronics service shop most of my life. I was born with a soldering iron in one hand and a solder sucker in the other, so I know good work when I see it! Mega thats fine work !
