Default Logo 550sx Gearing/ Power/ Overheating Issue

Hey guys,
I built my 550sx a few weeks ago, but just maidened it last week. After a few slow 3d flights, I found that I was pulling about 150 Amps on the YGE 90 and the ESC and motor were hotter than expected after such soft flights. I double checked Mr. Mels calculator and found that my gearing was off, and I couldn't get the high RPM I wanted, and the low RPM I was using for my soft flights was a little low.
I decided to switch to the 106t Mod 1 main gear and 12t pinion. I thought this would solve all of my issues. Mr. Mel said I should run 2400-ish, but I put 1900-2100-2300 in my VBC. Did a flight at each, and was still pulling about 150 amps from the lower RPM's, and was making everything hot at 2300. Not to mention the power didn't seem there.

What am I doing wrong?

Some things too tight to make it harder for the motor? Too high collective pitch angle ? Too aggressive collective management ? Strong winds ?

Motor timing and PWM out of whack can make for high temperatures and higher amps. So what type of motor do you have and whats your timing and PWM settings?

I forgot to take the temp gun with me to the field, so I cannot give an accurate number for the temps.

I am using the stock 4025-1100kv with the stock settings in the YGE 90. I do not believe I can change the timing and PWM with this ESC as it has mikado firmware uploaded to it.

Mind you one thing... Once motor is shut down, temperature increases and it may feel much more hot than while it is spinning. Btw, Scorpion motors are running hot.

As mentioned provide actual readings to see what temperatures are we talking about.

I'd expect that you can adjust it although I have not tried. I can adjust the timings on my Mikado version yge120 so I'd expect the 90lv to be no different.

Going to try tweaking my Mikado Yge90lv on my 480 in the next few days. Since putting 505 blades on it I just want to try adjusting it a bit. Flew it today but my card is in my laptop bag and I hardly ever bring it to the field since getting a Vcontrol.

The first thing I would do is drop down to the 11T given your target headspeeds. Then, I would double and triple check your gear mesh. Finally, I would use the YGE progcard to make sure it is set for 18 degrees timing advance and 12khz pwm frequency.

Yep getting the gearing right is probably the biggest handle to lower temps.
Did check 90lv today, found it set at T-18 PWM-10khz. Scorpion suggests T-5 and 8khz... One thing I've noticed is theres not much of a standard scaling on these numbers with vendors, so I just try different settings.
YGE timing has to be set higher, motor did not run well at 6, left it at 12. Dropped the PWM down to 8khz and it did make more power at lower head speeds, but packs were hotter.

With the canopy on the motor gets to 150F, Esc 130F, pack 120F. Canopy off everything runs 20F cooler in 88F weather.

I have a small heatsink installed on my 90lv because it was coming down in alarm on 95F days running 505mm blades. Heatsink fixed that.

Keep in mind that YGE does not measure motor timing the same as anyone else so 18deg is 'normal' on a YGE.

Can somebody recommend good settings for the following:

stock motor (4025-1100kv)
15T pinion (stock is 14T)
1700, 1900 and 2200 rpm?
YEP 120LV (equivalent to the YGE 120 LV v1 apparently)

I can feel it hesitate and bog at any headspeed when giving pitch. Right now I got 18 timing, 10 PWM, I and P gain both on the middle, would like the headspeed to hold a bit more. But maybe I'm just too used to the IKON gov on the other heli?

Hello prototype3a, so Kontronik recommends 12 degrees on their Pyro, what should be the timing on the YGE for that then?

What do you mean by "YGE does not measure motor timing as others', do you know how they do it then?

Thanks very much for information here!

Cheers

12deg in kontronik timing or castle or... ?

Honestly, no one really measures timing the same way exactly but most measure it closer to how CC does. YGE is just very very different.

My gut guess would be either 18 deg or the next step up. (24deg?)

i am using a hobbywing v3 100amp.. on a 4020-1100kv ( logo500 version motor combo)

it can withstand hardcore 3d, motor came down quite hot.. cos i am using a 16T pinion.

am very happy with this setup

i use hobbywing v3 in most of my heli now. so easy to set, great BEC, and able to run 7.2HV
