Default New tail rotor servo

I've added another servo to the Nexus servo line up, the DSW615MG, which is purpose made for tail rotor duty. I hope to have data up on the website soon. Meanwhile, here are basic specs.

DSW615MG - Digital, Coreless, Metal Gears, Aluminum center case, O-ring seals

Speed:
0.06 sec/60 degrees @ 4.8V
0.05 sec/60 degrees @ 6.0V

Torque:
3.8 kg-cm - 47 oz-in @ 4.8V
4.0 kg.cm - 56 oz-in @ 6.0V

It's not a Chinese servo, so don't expect the cheapo servo pricing for this unit - I'm thinking 70-75 bucks. Anyway, this is a real nice servo, which unlike Chinese servos have million-cycle potentiometers as used in our other Nexus servos. FWIW, I played something of a role in this servo's development, which is why it's rated for 6V and has metal gears (since boom strikes during crashes are Hell on tail rotor servo gears and the overwhelming majority of available gyros aren't safe on more than 6V). Here's a photo.

Cool fore- thought!

I've just recently "simplified" my electronics (no regulator) when using BLS series and LiFE cells...but BLS are $$$$!

Was impressed with the other Nexus servos - anxious to see this one in flight too!

Say $75 for a tail servo(purpose built) with the above specs - a GREAT Deal.

Cool.

Is that a metal case on that? I was not sure if those were paint lines or a heat sync.

Hi John,

Yes, the center case is aluminum, and the milled grooves are to aid in heat transfer.

I've been asked about using metal gears, which I am generally not a fan of. The reason is the forces on the tail are quite light so wear isn't so much the issue as durability. This, because it's my experience folks destroy tail servos with more frequency vs. cyclic servos due to the tail boom and linkage getting smacked during a crash by the blades. The end results are the gears being the 'fuse' and thus, failing, which the metal gears pretty much preclude.

This all has to do with my 'philosophy' of offering products, which are tough because we've all seen a T-Rex 600 come in for an auto dragging tail rotor blades in the grass and thereby breaking the forward gears driving the torque tube, right? The Pantera uses a tougher more durable drive belt instead of the more fragile plastic gears, which doesn't mean we recommend dragging the tail rotor blades through the grass, but does mean it withstands abuse far better than any T-Rex ever made. End result is you fly more instead of making repairs all the time.

I followed the same reasoning by specifying metal gears for this tail rotor servo. Anyway, when I have more time I'll try to get more photos on the site but in the meantime, here's the link to the new tail rotor servo.

JB I always have my tail in the dirt. Got to love the first sentence of the description.

"Yee haw this one is fast and perfect for the rudder" Get that yeehaw in more than just the BBC stuff. I like it.

I have only ever taken out one set of gears in my tail servo, but I like the idea of one with metal gears. On the 450 last night I just replaced all its servo gears to metal because I was going through to many sets of plastic gears.

Ray, thank you for the business. It's awaiting pickup as I type this. For anybody else interested, here are some servo links. JB

So, I've got one of these wonderful new TR servos, and based on just a cursory inspection right out of the box, it looks like it should be a winner.

The only pinch is that I'm lacking some information, and just wanted to check in with all you guys to see if you have some quick answers for me...

1) What is the servo's modulation in terms of frame rate and operating frequency? (x uSec @ x Hz)
2) What is the spline type on the output shaft? (Futaba / JR / etc...)

Thanks dudes!

From JB's link that you posted....

Don't know about the frame rate, but good question!

1520 micro-seconds and 300 Hz I believe but it'll be Monday before I can confirm. I sent a query immediately following your email but I've not heard back yet.

Here is an update, the frame rate is 333 Hz instead of 300 Hz.

JB, it might be a good idea to include that data on the web site on all of the servos you offer as all of the new FBL units ask for that info.

The high frame rate is a good thing and should be noted.

Thumbs up For sure!

That is precisely why I was inquiring- according to the manual, my Spartan Quark needs to know what kind of servo it's driving in order to maximize it's performance. This information is not available on the website, on the servo itself, or anywhere on the servo's package.

The servo itself has good heft and appears to be well constructed, and I'm looking forward to seeing just how well it performs with this gyro.

At any rate, thanks for the update! So just to be sure... this servo is modulated at 1520 ms @ 333 Hz, correct?

Looking forward to making IRCHA this year, and I'll be bringing a friend with an old Raptor 50 that has renewed interest in the hobby.

Thanks JB!

Well, How is this tail servo holding up for those using it?
Especialy if you're using a gy 520.......
May be updating the tail servo I have and I want to consider this one because I do like the nexus servos I'm using on cyclic and i my plane, they have been great thus far..
