Blown 55
So during my "panteradise" moment today the motor went silent.....(thank god for getting good at autos) the heli survived fine but upon inspection found this........appears the parts cost just makes it a write off as parts are 3/4 the cost of a new engine......rear bearing, piston, pin, liner, rod, piston pin. Its been very hot and humid out here and i did richen it some, had a good smoke trail, obviously not enough. Currently coolin off over a miller. Ill have a new one in the mail monday.......Just a sh!tty day!

That sucks. If you need parts in the future, check out rcjapan. I bought a new head for my OS55 due do stripped threads. I don't remember the cost but probably 40% less than through US dealers. Shipping was reasonable and took a week.
Edit - I have mine tuned where it sounds like it needs to be "cleared out" after just taking off. So it sounds too rich (a little bit of "four stroking", then I punch collective hard or a big loop, if it goes through the loop without sounding tinny at the top, the tuning is close. Usually the loop or whatever warms it up so it's running smooth without the "four stroking". What took me a while to figure out is if the tuning is perfect for straight and level flight, it's too lean when you get on it, so it needs a couple of clicks richer on the high speed. The mid seems to be best tested after pulling a big loop or high speed run. After going from full collective to suddenly unloading the engine... does it recover fast? No? To lean on middle.. I had a ball and with my Pantera, X5, and a foamy plane today. 10 flights combined. It was quite warm and still, with clear skies, so doing continuous flips was entertaining in the cloud of nitro smoke. I also auto rotated it nearly nose in toward me, and had to step aside as it landed where I was standing. Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk 2

That's the best OS55 tuning description I've heard recently, well done.
With respect to it being a shitty day, I disagree. Imagine if added to the cost of a blown engine you had crashed? Now that would be a shitty day! Me? I think you did fine and to be frank, buying the parts, despite being 3/4 the cost of a new one will make it effectively just like a brand new engine, e.g. you'll have to break it in again. Thus, you might want to reconsider since the job of R&R for those is simple and the money saved can be put toward fuel.

Further inspection of things i found 2 pin holes in the main fuel line..... And chance that could have been letting air in causing it to go lean??? After adding everything up im within $30 or so of what I can buy a new 55 for. I look at it as the spare parts im gaining....head, block, crank, carb. Probably never need any of them but who knows....maybe that mixture control for my MultiGov pro is something worth looking into....

An air leak is a known factor for ruining an engine because it goes too lean and results in what you have, a hole in the piston. Fact.
Spare parts? Yes, but of little to no value because everybody and his brother has these same parts left over and, quite simply, they almost never go bad. Well, that's not 100% true because I've seen ultralight 600 class models involved in crashes, which destroy the engine on impact. This, because it's been used as a stressed member in the frame assembly (said duty exceeding what OS designed it for). In any case, 30 bucks is a small enough price to pay for the joy of opening a box with a brand new engine, which has value. Especially for one like me, who is simply nuts for engines ;>)

Just to add to the discussion as it seems you located the culprit. This sounds contradictory but in hot weather aren't you supposed to lean out a click or two and in cold weather richen things up? I've read numerous threads on this here forum that have indicated as such.

Do check out rcjapan, though. Everything is in yen, so you feel like you need a second mortgage on the house until you do the conversion to USD. Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk 2
