Default Stock Trex 550L

Hi Guys,

Need to upgrade this 550L of mine, as the Talon 90 is way inadequate.

With the stock 730MX 850KV Motor, I'd like to upgrade the power system to the following:

ESC: Phoenix Edge HV 120

BEC: Western-Robotics Hercules Super BEC G2

Keeping it 6s with a stock motor until the next upgrade to 12s, my question is:

Running this new above mentioned power setup, will the stock 730MX 850KV Motor handle the extra power??

Regards

Default 730MX 850KV

730MX 850KV Max continuous current: 115A/195A(5sec)

run off a CC Edge HV 120 in a T550L ?

Also its only 6s for now..

when changing to 12s, that'll necessitate motor upgrade..

I think its good..

The 730MX motor lacks rpm (kv) IMO. For most sport fliers is adequate. I'm simply stating that changing the ESC out to a higher amperage unit is not going to be cost effective for the return. I've done it. It wasn't worth the $ or effort. However replacing the 730MX motor with the 890kv scorpion was a far better return for the investment. This Heli loves the higher head speed and having overhead within the ESC is key to proper governing. To each his own though. Just trying to keep others from making the same mistake I made.

swapping my dominator 850kv motor for a 890kv scorpion (40kv extra) vs changing the motor pinion adding more teeth for ultimately higher rpm.. same result less $$

or am I just smoking my socks ?

havent flown mine yet. still have do ikon and esc setup.
How does everyone get on with the canopy stand offs? Ive been having a hard time taking the canopy on and off, its fiddly. im thinking of changing them for thumb screw fixings.

is anybody flying 550l on 12s? i'm thinking of making this conversion. i upgraded a 600pro i had with a 550l frame. it is, then, a 550l stretched that i fly 6s with the 650mx motor.
there is something wrong with this heli, though...

Default 550L canopy stand offs

I was kinda disappointed with a few things on the 550L, going from a 550E.. the canopy is a mission..

As for 12s on the 550L.. I think it'll be terrifying, cannot wait!

The motor isn't adjustable. Unless you machine the motor mount holes. And no one makes a 17 tooth pinion. And even if you found one you would be robbing torque from the already weak 730MX.

BTW no one is gonna convert a 550L to 12S, there is no way you could ever balance it by shifting the packs to balance and the canopy fit.

i think it would be possible if you placed a 3300mah battery on the tray and the 2nd one right under the main shaft, sitting on the bottom part of the frame. since there is no bottom plate anymore, some sort of plank or board would be needed.
i think i'm going to try this. for some reason the stretched 550l with the 650mx motor that i put together is not flying very well.

I agree 100 percent on the 730mx being inadequate or a proper choice for the gear ratio of the heli. anything over 2300rpm and you have no headroom, anything below 2400rpm feels sluggish. nice job align.

i however wouldnt run the talon with the 730mx or scorpion, not for performance but for safety. i hit 175a+ multiple times a flight on my 730mx using a edge 120hv. i would sure be nervous running a talon.

What kind of current/watts are you pulling with the scorpion 890kv and what timing?
been looking for the best motor upgrade for my 550 that wont kill lipos

Using a kde adjustable motor mount and bearing support will allow you to use any motor and pinion combination you want.
1100kv, 12t, and the 112t slant is what I use and it is 2600rpm @ 100 %

i think it is the same used on 600pro. you'd have to make two new holes on the 550l frame for the motor plate and maybe machine the counter bearing a little bit or it would touch the autorotation gear.

Yes same width between the 600 pro and 550L. Btw mesh is adjusted by loosening the side bolts, they slide on little rails.
