Default What do I need to know?

So I've been looking into getting a 550 sized heli and I think I've settled on an E5. I'd like to run it in a 6s setup from what I can tell. I'm still pretty new to rc helis having built only one tarot 450.

At this point I'm in the "try and scrounge up enough money for parts and investigate" stage. I was hoping some of you guys could help me figure out what kinds of things I need for a larger heli that I wouldn't have needed on my 450.

Such as: esc size for the 6s setup, battery sizes, motor size with brand recommendations, bec? No bec?, Dual sats?, receiver?, wire gauges, types of servos with reccomendations, tools, and anything I'm too ignorant to ask about.

Welcome! I run my E5 with a 6S setup and love it. You'll want a motor in the 1100-1200 KV range and around a 120 amp ESC. Whether or not you want to run a BEC comes down to more of a personal preference. I've used flight packs but I'm using BECs on my electrics now. I don't like having to keep track of a second battery pack and whether it's charged, or not. The E5 uses standard size servos.

If you take a look in the Synergy electric sub-forum, there are some threads on a lot of people's setups. Another good place to look for setup ideas is in the E5 sub-forum on the Synergy forum. http://synergyrchelicopters.com/foru...php?board=20.0

As far as an esc goes, are there any with integrated bec's? Are they any good? What are the pros and cons to those units and a separate bec?

I keep seeing bk servos pop up in posts and the scorpion motor. Are they the best choices? What are some other options?

The scorpion 4025-1100 is a great motor and if you do some shopping you can get a used one pretty cheap. I personally do not trust bec's because I've had one fail and watched a heli fall about 200ft straight into the ground. So I use hv servos and a 1100 mah 2s pack for power. I use a YEP 150a esc. Has active freewheeling, plenty of over head, great price and has been running strong for a few hundred flights

I've been running a Scorpion commander V 130A SBEC for two years now and it's been great. They don't make the 130A version any more but they do make a 120A version.

Western Robotics BECs are really popular and seem to be quite reliable. I've been running a Castle Creations BEC on my E7 for a long time and it's been reliable. I did have a CC BEC fail a few years ago but I had the input wired to 12S. Now, when I use a BEC, I will only wire it to 6S, maximum. The closer the input and output voltage are to each other, the more efficiently the BEC can run and will be more reliable, long-term.

The only internal BEC I trust is Kontronik. They're expensive, but I find them to be worth it for the solid gov and BEC. If I were to use anything else in this heli, or wanted to run my electronics above 6V I would default to the Western Robotics Hercules Super Mini BEC. To supplement what has been said above regarding motors, the Xnova 4025-1120 would also be a fantastic choice for a 550. The E5 is a very strong heli, and very versatile should you ever want to change your setup. Great choice! :thumbup

Another motor option is the KDE
For 6S you might want to use the KDE600XF-1100-G3

I have a 6S KDE 1175 kV motor, Castle 100A ESC, four 5000 mAh Gens Ace 6S packs, and 550 blades, all in great condition. I switched to 12S. PM me if you're interested.

It would certainly do the trick. I think you give up logging with the Talon, though. I personally find ESC logs to be a very valuable tool for both tuning and troubleshooting.

I did a little reading on it and saw that most people complained about that.

I rarely look at logs unless I think I have an issue. I have used the Talon 120 on two heli's and it's a great unit. The BEC is strong and reliable.
Yes, It would be nice to have logging. Essentially we would have an Edge with BEC. This would likely effect the price. Yes I wish it had the sensor out wire. But it is still a very good ESC!

Cheers

Anyone have any thoughts on a 100a esc? I have a hobbywing 50 v3 on my 450 and like it. I was wondering about using the 100a on a 6s setup.

120 amps seems to be the norm on 6S.
It would depend on your flying style more than anything.

But the lower the voltage you use, the higher the amperage to make-up the wattage used by the motor.
Also, the higher the amperage the hotter things get.
