In contest models, yes. It plays a big role in model tracking. You won't see an F3C model without one. FBL machines do not need one as they rely on their gyros to track straight. They do not need the vertical one either.

I like it for the extra visability, mine is neon orange, these 450's get hard to see at a distance.

+1 Visibility, It is a opportunity to put a bit of bright color on the tail to make it stand out. I got a florescent red set, helps me see the tail. Heck, for $6, why not? Mine have held up great for two years.

Some people say it effects backward flight. I didn't really notice any difference with it on or off.

I took it off.
