Im working in my Atom 500 to convert from FB to FBL. Im tyred to read posts with problems and tricks to leave the machine working as it needs... the question is..... how much better is the ATOM 500 FBL from its original Flybarred? Leave it 100% as Ive read is a PITA!!!! I dont know if its better goback and continue flying my ATOM 500 FB, stock settings with NO PROBLEM AT ALL!!!!

You'll get extended flight times and the heli will track better in big maneuvers.

I wouldn't mind social media so much if it didn't involve people.

+1
And cheaper crashes, less maintenance (less parts with bearings).

+1 for FBL ... well worth it. I find it easier to install, setup, and maintain compared to a flybarred head as well.

Infinitely adjustable and better in wind.
Just plain more fun to fly I think.

The atom 500 is a blast to fly fb.

It is a whole new level when you go fbl. Windy days were never so much fun for 500 owners.

I have converted one Atom from flybarred to FBL and set it up.

I have set up a friend's Atom that was built as an FBL.

I have worked on a third.

If found the conversion to be very easy.

I found the setup to be very easy (all three were equipped with V-Bar).

The stability and control is improved (making a great machine even better).

I had to move the balls in on the servo arms (which I have had to do on all of my flybarred to FBL conversions (including Compass, Kyosho, EXI, and Align). On the Atom I had to trim the Delrin links about 1-2mm to get things perfect.

Very easy and no problems with the ones I have worked on.

There are many, on this forum, to assist you, should you need it.

Thank you all. Our flying field is very windy, most of the time. So if FBL is better in windy days, it will be a very good improvement to fly in my clubs field. I will give FBL a try. Sure I wont be dissapointed. I will maiden tomorrow, will take photographs and post my results. If FBL is as good as you say, I will convert my 6HV to FBL too. Ive set up the Atom with 3GX v1,2, and found it very easy to set up.

Have a nice re-maiden. And I'm convinced you will go FBL on the 6HV asap.

FBL or FB, you've got the deciding vote just as long as you stay with Compass products,
you'll be happy, i'm sure.

Ok, made a few flights with my "new" Atom 500 FBL version. What I can only say is .... "WOW". After setup touchs to tail gyro gain, and ELE gain in the 3GX unit, switch to Idle 1, and "its time to fun flights!!!!" . Cross wind as some of you said is "piece of cake" predictable maneuvres, perfect aligned loops, i cant be more happy with FBL conversion. The only thing that I need to discover is a "shake" when rotor starts to spin up. It dissapears when it reachs the desired HS, I didnt tached but Im running 85% flat with all stock. Thank you all !!!

My Atom shakes on soft start spool as well. Can't get rid of it, but i am also not going crazy looking for the cause. I just fly it. I think it has to do with the blades not being 100 unfolded until they load up as the head speed increases.

I am only seeing 2700rpm out of my factory Compass motor at the start of the flight. That's on the factor pinion and spur with Hyperion 2650 35c packs.

I am extending mine over the winter to a 5.5. I kinda got away from the smaller birds.

The shake is pretty normal. It's just the main blades making their last extension due to centrifugal forces. You could probably lessen the shake if you loosened the blades, but then you'd be prone to boom strikes. I'll take the little shake myself.

I just try to set the blades as good as possible before I spool up.
This does (most of) the trick on my 550.

Here's my take on it: I too was in a dilemma about FB vs FBL for quite a while. I will guess that like me, you've flown for X number of years on Fb and learned all the tricks of the trade to get the thing singing like a canary. Then, along comes FBl with all the promise of improved everything, but you can't get it to croak like a frog, right?

Well, since you changed the game up a little bit, you have to expect some growing pains. Think: How long did it take you to nail an FB setup to begin with? Hours, days, weeks, maybe even years??? I know it took me a very long time to "get it" and I still don't believe I have any kind of mastery over the setup. The good thing is a lot of those skills translate over, you just have to learn a new dialect, not a whole new language.

I can tell you first handedly, I about threw the whole FBL thing out the window and I was frustrated that while it felt better right away, I couldn't get it to fly like some of the other guy's helis with identical, if not, lesser gear than what I had on my machine. I could spank my Atom (FB) around really hard, but my 6HV (FBL) felt like a slug even though it had a lot more power and speed than the 500.

I later got to set up my buddy's Atom on FBL once I'd gotten the setup hammered out a little better on my 6HV and whaddaya know...I didn't want to give the Atom back to save my life!!! It flew so well that it pretty much instantly changed my mind about FBL altogether, and that was before the recent 3.08 update. Holy crap,if I thought it flew great then, V1/V2 had nothing on the V3 stuff, so again, I'm completely on-board with FBL through and through. Just have to scrape together the cash to buy the conversion kits and gyro units for all of my other machines now.
